5 Methods of Progressive Overload to Force Muscle Growth

How To Build a Budget Home Gym for Cheap

Consider your home gym as an investment in long-term health, offering not only physical benefits but also mental well-being. The efficiency and flexibility of a home gym empower you to maximize your time, making fitness a seamless part of your daily life.

Beyond a solitary retreat, a home gym can be a hub for family fitness or community bonding, fostering motivation and accountability. As we explore the transformative power of home gyms, delve into the cost-effective, time-efficient, and continuously adaptable features that make them an enticing choice for those seeking a sustainable and rewarding fitness journey.

Before diving into the nitty-gritty of home gym essentials, let’s acknowledge the universal truth: the cheapness force. Connecting with the innate desire to save money transcends wealth brackets. So, regardless of your financial status, the pursuit of a cost-effective home gym unites us all.

5 Ways To Burn More Fat At The Gym

The Budget-Friendly Home Gym Blueprint:

  1. Adjustable Dumbbells (Approx. $150 – $350):

Adjustable dumbbells emerge as the cornerstone of your home gym. Ranging from 10 to 50 pounds, they provide unparalleled versatility for a variety of exercises. The price, justified by the extensive workout options they offer, makes them an indispensable investment.

adjustable dumbbells
  • Adjustable Bench Press (Approx. $100 – $200):

Complementing your dumbbells, an adjustable bench press opens up a world of exercises. Look for one with flat and incline options, and perhaps a seat hook for added versatility. This addition transforms your workouts and enhances the value of your home gym.

  • Budget Power Rack (Approx. $300 – $500):

A budget power rack becomes the focal point, providing safety and enabling exercises like squats and pull-ups. Paired with an Olympic bar (an additional investment), it forms the core of your strength training. Don’t break the bank; opt for a sturdy, budget-friendly option made of steel.

  • Cable Attachments (Approx. $50 – $100):

Transforming your power rack into a cable machine, cable attachments offer incredible exercise variety. From curls to rows, these attachments provide a full-body workout experience. A smart and efficient use of your money, enhancing the capabilities of your existing equipment.

  • Different Cable Handles (Approx. $20 – $50 Each):

The secret weapon for maximizing variation in your workouts lies in different cable handles. Investing in various handles is like adding multiple machines to your home gym. The cost, ranging from $20 to $50 each, is a small price for the diversity they bring to your exercises.

In the grand finale of your budget-friendly home gym, consider the investment in different cable handles as a game-changer. For a modest sum, you’re not just buying handles; you’re acquiring the potential for endless workout variations, making each session exciting and effective.

With a strategic approach and an estimated budget of around $1,500, you can build a home gym that rivals commercial facilities. Remember, this is an investment in your health, and the long-term benefits far outweigh the upfront costs. For savvy shoppers and deal hunters, the potential to assemble a full-scale home gym for as low as $700 to $900 exists.

So, whether you’re navigating the labyrinth of budget constraints or simply embodying the cheapness force, your home gym awaits. A space where you never have to leave, equipped with everything you need for optimum results. Now, it’s time to turn your budget-friendly fitness haven into a reality. Give it some thought, and let the gains begin.

Home Gym Essentials for CrossFit and Functional Fitness Athletes (Checklist)

The Home Gym Advantage: Unveiling the Pros of Your Personal Fitness Sanctuary

Embarking on a fitness journey is a transformative endeavor, and where you choose to sculpt your physique plays a pivotal role. While commercial gyms have their allure, the rise of home gyms has garnered significant attention. Let’s delve into the plethora of advantages that come with having a home gym, offering a tailored fitness experience like no other.

1. Convenience Redefined:

The most evident and perhaps cherished advantage of a home gym is unparalleled convenience. No more commuting to the gym, battling rush-hour traffic or contending with crowded locker rooms. Your workout haven is steps away, accessible at any time that aligns with your schedule. The luxury of a 24/7 fitness sanctuary is a game-changer, ensuring your fitness goals revolve around your life, not the other way around.

2. Personalized Atmosphere:

Your home gym is more than a space; it’s an extension of your personality. Tailor the atmosphere to your liking — play your favorite tunes, set the lighting to your preference, and exercise in an environment that motivates and inspires. The absence of judgmental eyes fosters a comfortable space where you can push your limits without external scrutiny.

3. Investment in Long-Term Health:

Consider your home gym an investment in your long-term health. With a personalized space for physical activity, you’re more likely to adhere to a consistent workout routine. The cumulative benefits of regular exercise extend beyond physical appearance, encompassing mental health, immune system strength, and overall well-being.

4. Flexibility and Time Efficiency:

Time is a precious commodity, and a home gym respects that. Say goodbye to waiting for equipment or adhering to rigid gym hours. Work out at your pace, focusing on the exercises that matter most to you. The efficiency of a home gym empowers you to maximize your time, squeezing in a quick session even during a hectic day.

5. Cost-Effective in the Long Run:

While the initial investment in home gym equipment may seem significant, it pays off in the long run. Consider the cumulative cost of gym memberships, commuting expenses, and potential hidden costs. A home gym becomes a cost-effective solution, saving money over time and offering a valuable return on your investment.

6. Privacy and Introspection:

For those who relish solitude during workouts or simply prefer a more private setting, a home gym provides the ideal environment. It’s a space where introspection meets exertion, allowing you to focus inwardly on your fitness journey without external distractions.

7. Family and Community Bonding:

A home gym isn’t just a solitary retreat; it can also be a hub for family fitness or community bonding. Encourage loved ones to join your fitness endeavors, turning your home gym into a shared space for collective health and well-being. The sense of community fosters motivation and accountability.

8. Continuous Adaptability:

The adaptability of a home gym is a hidden gem. Customize your equipment based on evolving fitness goals, adding or upgrading as needed. This adaptability ensures your home gym grows with you, accommodating changes in workout intensity, preferences, or specific training regimens.

In essence, a home gym isn’t merely a collection of weights and machines; it’s a holistic approach to fitness tailored to your unique lifestyle. The conveniences, personalization, and long-term benefits make it a compelling choice for those seeking a sustainable and rewarding fitness journey. So, consider the transformational power of your home gym—an investment in health, convenience, and the pursuit of your best self.

We were fortunate enough to get our hands on a pair of Nike Metcon 9 and have rigorously tested them over an extended period. The verdict? These shoes excel in virtually any type of fitness activity you can imagine, whether it’s cardio, bodybuilding, CrossFit, or pretty much any physical activity that requires you to wear shoes.

In this comprehensive review, we will delve into the five compelling reasons why the Nike Metcon 9 is poised to elevate your training to the next level.

Nike Metcon 9 Full Review

On Nike’s website, you can choose from 4 different Metcon 9:

  • Metcon 9 – the original
  • Metcon 9 AMP – whiter Metcon with transparent rubber wrap and black logo
  • Metcon 9 EasyOn – with Nike FlyEase technology to help make it easier to put on and take off
  • Metcon 9 By You – design your Metcon the way you want it, like the heel clips and Swoosh logo, the rope wrap with options of translucent colours.

Specs:

Outsole: rubber

Midsole: Dual-density foam

Upper: woven textile

Colours: AMP: Phantom/Light Bone/Black; Men’s: Monarch/Mica Green/Medium Ash/Amber Brown, Black/Anthracite/Smoke Grey/White, Light Smoke Grey/Photon Dust/White/White, White/Racer Blue/Obsidian/Pure Platinum, Olive/High Voltage/Luminous Green/Sequoia; Women’s: Amber Brown/Light Bone/Mica Green/Guava Ice, Pink Oxford/Diffused Taupe/Pearl Pink/White, Jade Ice/Black/Mineral/White, Sail/Guava Ice/Rush Fuchsia/White, Black/Anthracite/Smoke Grey/White

A Well-Rounded Fitness Companion:

When searching for the ideal fitness shoe, considerations such as fit, cushioning, stability, breathability, durability, weight, and flexibility all come into play. After five weeks of rigorous use, we can confidently assert that the Nike Metcon 9 ticks all the right boxes, making it one of the most well-rounded fitness shoes currently available.

Enhanced Durability and Strength:

To conquer demanding exercises like split squats and deadlifts, Nike has taken the Metcon 9 to new heights by elevating the Hyperlift plate in the heel. This not only enhances stability but also reinforces the heel’s structure, providing a steadfast and secure sensation, particularly when confronting substantial weights.

Source: Johanna Gminder

Unwavering Focus:

A groundbreaking feature of the Metcon 9 is its lace lock system, which seamlessly connects to the shoe tongue. This eliminates any concerns about laces coming undone or getting entangled in fabrics during your workouts. With this innovative design, your laces remain securely in place, enabling you to maintain an unwavering focus on your training, free from distractions.

Conquer New Heights:

Nike has extended the rubber wrap along the sides of the Metcon 9, fortifying its durability and support compared to its predecessor, the Metcon 8. This enhancement empowers you to conquer rope climbs repeatedly without apprehensions about wear and tear. The wrap now extends from the midsole to the upper, offering added support for multidirectional movements.

Durability Meets Breathability:

The Metcon 9 incorporates lightweight and breathable mesh, ensuring your feet remain cool even during intense workouts. This mesh not only keeps you comfortable but also exhibits impressive durability, capable of withstanding abrasions, cuts, and the rapid lateral movements often encountered during rigorous training sessions.

Unrivalled Comfort:

The dual-density midsole of the Metcon 9 sets a new standard in comfort. Combining firm foam on the outer layer with soft foam on the inner layer, it provides responsive cushioning that ensures lasting comfort throughout extended cardio sessions and a wide range of dynamic movements.

But Wait, There’s More:

  • A comprehensive rubber outsole guarantees unwavering traction during dynamic activities such as cleans and walking lunges.
  • The breathable textile material features a haptic print that creates a three-dimensional effect, enhancing not only durability and texture but also simplifying the task of keeping your shoes clean.
  • Furthermore, this textile material offers flexible and robust support in the toe area, permitting your toes to naturally splay when lifting heavy weights, ensuring unrestricted movement.
Nike Metcon 9 EasyOn

In summary, the Nike Metcon 9 is more than just a shoe; it’s a fitness companion that’s been meticulously designed to elevate your training to new heights. With its unwavering focus on durability, support, comfort, and versatility, it’s poised to become your trusted partner on your fitness journey, regardless of the challenges you encounter along the way.

So, gear up and get ready to experience excellence in every step with the Nike Metcon 9Nike Metcon 9.

5 Reasons The New Nike Metcon 9 Will Take Your Training to the Next Level

I have used the Nike Metcon 9 for over a month now. By the way, I chose the olive green one. Since I was travelling, I wasn’t able to use it inside a gym, but managed to get some weights from a friend and tried out some old-style backyard liftings with deadlifts and cleans.

In a nutshell, these shoes are a great well-rounded fitness friend for you to have at your disposal any time you are going to work out.

Reason 1: Versatility

The Nike Metcon 9 is a multi-purpose gear you should consider adding to your wardrobe.

Although one of the main characteristics that people see on the shoe is the rubber wrap which clearly will help anyone master rope climbs, the shoe is not targeted at doing that only.

While I was wearing them, it felt like I bought a runner’s shoes when I went for a trial run, but it gave me stability enough to perform heavy deadlifts and those cleans.

Light enough for cardio, flexible enough for lunges, stable enough for heavy weightlifting, that’s the Nike Metcon 9. It’s versatile and offers you everything you need for CrossFit, bodybuilding, or endurance training. Because the Metcon is flexible and stable at the same time

Reason 2: Durability

I also ended up using this shoe for something most people would not think to do, but it was the only pair of shoes I had at the moment: I went for a mountain hike with them through rough terrain.

And this is another reason to get the Metcon 9, the durability of these shoes seems to last. Granted, I only had them for a month now, and although I have worn them outside on rough terrain, concrete, dirt and indoors, they still feel new.

Reason 3: Comfortable

If you are worried about your mobility, do not panic. The Nike Metcon 9 has substantial ankle mobility for CrossFit lovers who need to push hard during their WOD.

Ankle mobility and heel cushioning are some of the highlights of this shoe that will help you move from point A to point B with extreme confidence. That is especially important for me, as I have always had issues with my ankle in the past.

Reason 4: Stability

These shoes are as good as you can get if you don’t want to spend money on a specific shoe for powerlifting or heavy weightlifting.

The sole is wide enough to give you stability for heavy barbell lifts without compromising your form. This, in turn, will reduce the chances of injuring yourself, which means you can train more often and improve your fitness each day!

Source: Johanna Gminder

Reason 5: Badass

This might not be the most logical or compelling argument, but hear me out. The design of the shoes is unique and I happened to go to a university reunion with them. Soon enough, many people came up to me asking about the shoes. They were described as badass by some.

And you do feel that way once you put on the shoes. You feel dominant, fearless and tough as nails.

Of course, the shoes alone will not get you fit, but you will feel so comfortable wearing them, that you will want to wear them daily as you should.

For those reasons, we believe that the Nike Metcon 9 should be the next all-rounder fitness shoe you buy.

Why the KNKG Core Duffel is the Best Gym Bag We Have Ever Used https://www.boxrox.com/why-the-knkg-core-duffel-is-the-best-gym-bag-we-have-ever-used/ Sun, 10 Sep 2023 16:01:00 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=186121 When it comes to training, the KNKG Core Duffel is our top pick for strength, weightlifting and functional fitness athletes. It has everything that every serious gymgoer needs to bring their A game each time they step inside the gym, box or weightlifting platform.

Your gym bag should be a point of pride, not a tired, dirty and odorous blob that simply carts everything around in a formless mass.

Your gym bag is the foundation and organisational support to help you through every workout. It reflects your goals, training structures and dedication to the workout at hand. Like a good warm up, it sets the tone for the time ahead.

Founded in 2011, the original idea behind KNKG (short for King Kong) was to craft the best quality and most functional gym bags that existed.

We think they succeeded.

What Factors Should You Consider When Buying a Gym Bag?

When buying a gym bag, there are several factors you should consider to ensure that it meets your specific needs and preferences.

Here are some important factors to consider:

Size and Capacity

Consider the size of the bag based on the items you plan to carry to the gym. Think about your workout routine and the types of equipment or clothing you’ll need to bring along.

A gym bag should have enough space to accommodate your essentials without being overly bulky.

Compartments and Organization

Look for a bag with multiple compartments and pockets to help you keep your belongings organised. Separate compartments for shoes, wet items, and valuables can be particularly useful.

group class vs pt crossfitSource: Stevie D Photography

This makes it easier to find what you need quickly and prevents items from getting mixed up or damaged.

Durability and Material

Choose a gym bag made of durable materials that can withstand frequent use and carry heavy items.

Nylon, polyester, or canvas are common materials used in gym bags, known for their durability and water resistance. Reinforced stitching and sturdy zippers are also important for long-lasting performance.

Comfort and Carrying Options

Consider the bag’s carrying options. Look for padded handles and adjustable shoulder straps for comfortable carrying.

Some bags may also have additional features like a cross-body strap or backpack-style straps, allowing you to choose the most comfortable carrying method for your needs.

Ventilation and Odor Control

If you plan to carry sweaty gym clothes or shoes, opt for a bag with ventilation features such as mesh panels or ventilated shoe compartments. This helps prevent odours from building up and allows for airflow to keep your items fresh.

Security

Look for a gym bag that offers some level of security for your belongings. Features like lockable zippers or hidden pockets can provide added peace of mind, especially if you need to leave your bag unattended in a locker room or other shared space.

Design and Style

While not essential, the design and style of the bag may be important to you. Choose a bag that reflects your personal taste and suits your lifestyle. Consider colour, patterns, and any additional aesthetic elements that are important to you.

Price

Set a budget for your gym bag and consider the value for money. There is a wide range of options available at different price points, so it’s essential to find a balance between quality and affordability.

By considering these factors, you can find a gym bag that meets your requirements in terms of size, durability, organization, comfort, and style, ensuring a more enjoyable and hassle-free gym experience.

Why are Good Quality Materials Essential When Buying a Gym Bag?

Good quality materials are essential when buying a gym bag for several reasons:

Durability: A gym bag undergoes regular use, and it needs to withstand the wear and tear of carrying heavy items, being tossed around, and enduring various environments.

High-quality materials such as nylon, polyester, or canvas are known for their durability and ability to withstand frequent use without easily tearing or breaking.

Longevity: Investing in a gym bag made of good quality materials ensures that it will last longer.

Cheaper bags made of subpar materials may show signs of wear and tear after only a short period of use, potentially leading to the need for a replacement.

By choosing a bag made of high-quality materials, you can enjoy its benefits for an extended period.

Protection: Your gym bag is responsible for keeping your belongings safe and protected. Quality materials offer better protection against external factors such as moisture, dirt, and impacts.

For example, water-resistant or waterproof materials can safeguard your items from rain or accidental spills.

Additionally, sturdy materials provide better cushioning and shock absorption, protecting fragile items like electronics or glass containers.

Ease of Cleaning: A gym bag is exposed to sweat, dirt, and odours from your workout gear. Good quality materials are often easier to clean, making it simpler to maintain the bag’s cleanliness and hygiene.

Some materials are machine washable or can be easily wiped clean, helping to keep your gym bag fresh and odour-free.

Appearance: A gym bag made of high-quality materials tends to have a more attractive and polished appearance. It retains its shape, colour, and overall aesthetic appeal over time.

This can be important if you use your gym bag for other purposes, such as traveling or as an everyday bag, where you want to maintain a professional or stylish look.

Overall, investing in a gym bag made of good quality materials ensures durability, longevity, protection for your belongings, ease of cleaning, and an appealing appearance.

While it may require a higher upfront cost, it is always worth it and will save you money in the long run by avoiding the need for frequent replacements.

KNKG Core Backpack

If you need something a little smaller, then we would recommend the KNKG Core Backpack.

This is a versatile and excellent backpack, perfect when you need to train, but might not require two pairs of shoes or such an extensive array of kit.

Don’t worry though, you can still comfortably fit your training shoes in the bottom of the bag.

It was voted the Man of Many #1 gym bag 2022, and closed out last year as the Men’s Journal top pick for the active man in 2022.

It is King Kong’s bestselling gym bag.

The main difference between this and the previous gym bag is the unique weightlifting belt attachment.

This feature allows the bag be used as a regular backpack, whilst carrying the lifting belt on the outside.

The backpack has two variations based on volume, at 25l and 33l respectively.

What are the Advantages of YKK zippers on Duffel Bags?

YKK zippers are widely recognized and preferred by many manufacturers and consumers for their high quality and reliability.

When it comes to duffel bags and backpacks, the use of YKK zippers offers several advantages:

Durability: YKK zippers are known for their exceptional durability. They are designed to withstand frequent use and the rigors of opening and closing a bag.

The materials and construction of YKK zippers make them less prone to breakage or getting stuck, ensuring that your duffel bag remains functional over an extended period.

Smooth Operation: YKK zippers are known for their smooth and effortless operation. The teeth of the zipper mesh together seamlessly, allowing for easy and reliable opening and closing of the bag.

This smooth operation enhances the overall user experience, preventing frustrations commonly associated with cheap or unreliable zippers.

Strength and Security: YKK zippers are known for their strength and resistance to pulling apart. They are less likely to separate or break under stress, providing an added level of security for your belongings.

This is particularly important for duffel bags or backpacks that may contain heavy items or when you need to secure your bag during travel.

Self-Repairing Feature: YKK zippers often come with a self-repairing feature. If a portion of the zipper gets misaligned or separated, you can simply move the slider back and forth to realign and repair it.

This feature is convenient and can save you from the hassle of replacing the entire zipper or seeking repair services.

Availability and Reputation: YKK is a well-established and reputable brand in the zipper industry. Their zippers are widely available, making it easier to find replacements or spare parts if needed.

The brand’s reputation for quality and reliability gives consumers confidence in the performance of their products.

KNKG Gym Bags: Room for Everything

So, what exactly can you fit in your new bag?

Weightlifters typically have specific items they carry in their gym bags to support their training sessions.

Weightlifting Shoes

Weightlifting shoes provide stability, support, and an elevated heel to help weightlifters maintain proper form during lifts. These specialized shoes are designed to optimize performance and safety during weightlifting movements.

Lifting Straps

Lifting straps are used to improve grip and assist in holding onto heavy weights, particularly during exercises like deadlifts, rows, or shrugs. They wrap around the wrists and attach to the barbell, reducing the strain on the grip muscles.

Wrist wraps provide additional support and stability to the wrists during heavy lifting. They are wrapped around the wrists to help prevent excessive bending or hyperextension, reducing the risk of injury.

Knee Sleeves or Wraps

Knee sleeves or wraps are worn to provide compression, warmth, and support to the knee joints. They can help with stability, reduce pain, and provide a sense of confidence during squats, lunges, or other lower-body exercises.

Weightlifting Belt

A weightlifting belt is used to provide core stability and support during heavy compound lifts such as squats and deadlifts. It helps maintain proper form and can increase intra-abdominal pressure, enhancing spinal support.

Chalk

Chalk is commonly used by weightlifters to improve grip by reducing sweat and enhancing friction. It is particularly useful for exercises like deadlifts, pull-ups, and heavy barbell lifts.

Towel

A small towel is useful for wiping off sweat during intense training sessions. It helps keep hands and equipment dry, maintaining a secure grip.

Water Bottle

Staying hydrated during workouts is crucial, so weightlifters often carry a water bottle to ensure they have easy access to fluids. It’s important to replenish fluids lost through sweat to maintain performance and prevent dehydration.

Why is a Great Gym Bag Essential for All Weightlifters and Fitness Lovers?

A great gym bag is essential for all weightlifters and fitness lovers for several reasons:

Organization and Convenience: A well-designed gym bag helps keep all your workout essentials organized and easily accessible.

It typically offers multiple compartments and pockets to store items like shoes, clothing, accessories, water bottles, and personal care products. This ensures that you can quickly find what you need, saving time and eliminating the hassle of rummaging through a disorganized bag.

Protection of Equipment and Belongings: A dedicated gym bag provides a safe and protective space for your weightlifting equipment and personal belongings.

It helps prevent damage or loss by keeping items separate from other gym equipment, minimizing the risk of scratches, spills, or accidents.

Features like padded compartments and reinforced stitching offer additional protection for fragile items such as electronics or valuables.

Hygiene and Cleanliness: Carrying a gym bag allows you to separate your used workout gear from the rest of your belongings, preventing the spread of sweat, dirt, or odours.

Many gym bags include features like ventilated compartments or designated spaces for wet or dirty items, helping to keep your bag and other items fresh and odour-free.

Convenience for Travel and Commuting: A gym bag is not only useful for workouts but also for traveling to and from the gym.

It provides a convenient and organized way to carry your workout gear, clothes, and accessories.

Whether you’re commuting to a nearby gym or traveling to a different location, a well-designed gym bag makes it easier to transport all your fitness essentials.

Versatility and Multi-functionality: A great gym bag can serve multiple purposes beyond the gym. It can be used as a travel bag, weekend bag, or even a daily work bag, depending on its design and size.

This versatility allows you to make the most of your investment and eliminates the need for multiple bags for different purposes.

Motivation and Mindset: Having a dedicated gym bag that you love and feel proud to carry can enhance your motivation and mindset towards fitness.

It creates a sense of commitment and readiness, reminding you of your goals and the importance of staying consistent with your workouts. A great gym bag can become a symbol of your dedication to a healthy and active lifestyle.

The Benefits of Strong and Powerful Grip Strength

Having strong grip strength offers several benefits that extend beyond just being able to hold onto objects tightly. Here are some of the key advantages of having a strong grip:

Improved Performance in Daily Activities: A strong grip allows you to perform everyday tasks more efficiently, such as carrying groceries, opening jars, turning doorknobs, or holding objects securely.

Enhanced Sports Performance: Many sports require a strong grip, including weightlifting, rock climbing, weightlifting, functional fitness, and martial arts. Having a powerful grip can improve your performance and help prevent injuries in these activities.

Reduced Risk of Injuries: A strong grip can stabilize your wrists and prevent strain or injury during weightlifting exercises, lifting heavy objects, or performing physically demanding tasks.

Better Hand and Finger Strength: Strong grip strength also translates into stronger hand and finger muscles, which can be beneficial for activities that require fine motor skills, like playing musical instruments or typing on a keyboard.

Increased Bone Density: Regularly engaging in grip-strengthening exercises can help improve bone density in the hands, wrists, and forearms, reducing the risk of conditions like osteoporosis.

Enhanced Hand Endurance: A strong grip can help delay hand fatigue during activities that involve repetitive hand movements, such as using tools or playing certain sports.

Positive Impact on Overall Strength: Grip strength is correlated with overall body strength. By improving your grip strength, you may see improvements in other areas of your physical fitness.

Better Joint Health: Strengthening the muscles around your wrists and fingers can provide better support to the joints, potentially reducing the risk of joint-related issues and conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome.

Functional Independence: Maintaining strong grip strength as you age can support your ability to perform daily tasks independently, which can contribute to a higher quality of life and a reduced risk of age-related functional limitations.

Improved Mental Health: Some research suggests that grip strength is associated with better cognitive function and mental well-being. Stronger grip has been linked to lower stress levels and improved mood.

What are the Best Exercises to Build Better Grip Strength?

Building better grip strength requires a combination of exercises that target the muscles in your hands, wrists, and forearms. Here are some of the best exercises to help improve your grip strength:

Hand Grippers

Squeezing hand grippers is a simple and effective way to target the muscles in your hands and improve grip strength. Start with a gripper that provides moderate resistance and gradually work your way up to stronger grippers as you get stronger.

Farmer’s Walks

This exercise involves holding heavy dumbbells or kettlebells in each hand and walking for a designated distance or time. It engages the entire grip and is excellent for building functional grip strength.

Deadlifts

Deadlifts are a compound exercise that works the muscles in your hands, wrists, and forearms, as well as your back, glutes, and legs. Focus on using a double overhand grip or a mixed grip (one hand pronated, one hand supinated) to challenge your grip.

Pull-Ups and Chin-Ups

These upper body exercises require significant grip strength to support your body weight. Performing them regularly will help strengthen your grip.

Plate Pinches

Pinch two weight plates together using your fingertips and thumbs. Hold them for as long as you can. This exercise targets the pinch grip strength.

Towel Pull-Ups

Hang a towel over a pull-up bar and grasp the ends instead of the bar itself. Perform pull-ups using the towel grip, which adds an extra challenge to your grip strength.

Wrist Curls and Reverse Wrist Curls

Use a barbell or dumbbells to perform wrist curls and reverse wrist curls to strengthen the muscles in your forearms.

Finger Extensions

Use rubber bands or specialized finger extension devices to work on the muscles responsible for opening your fingers against resistance.

Rock Climbing

Climbing challenges your grip in various positions and angles, making it an excellent sport for building grip strength and forearm endurance.

When incorporating these exercises into your routine, it’s essential to maintain proper form and start with appropriate resistance for your current strength level. Gradually increase the intensity as you progress. Additionally, ensure adequate rest and recovery between grip-strengthening sessions to avoid overuse injuries.

Remember that grip strength development takes time and consistency. Stay patient, and over time, you should see improvements in your grip strength, which will positively impact various aspects of your physical performance and daily activities.

What are the Benefits of Using Lifting Straps?

Lifting straps are useful tools that can provide several benefits when used properly and in the right context. Here are some of the advantages of using lifting straps:

Enhanced Grip

Lifting straps can significantly improve your grip on barbells, dumbbells, or other lifting implements. By wrapping the straps around the bar and your wrist, you create a secure connection that allows you to focus more on the target muscle groups rather than worrying about your grip slipping.

Increased Lifting Capacity

With a more secure grip, you can lift heavier weights during exercises like deadlifts, rows, and pull-ups. This can be particularly beneficial when targeting specific muscle groups that may be limited by grip strength.

Reduced Forearm Fatigue

Lifting straps can help reduce forearm fatigue during exercises that heavily tax the grip. This allows you to concentrate on the primary muscle groups without being limited by your grip strength.

Targeting Specific Muscles

By taking grip strength out of the equation, lifting straps allow you to isolate specific muscles more effectively. This can be beneficial when you want to target particular muscle groups without the grip strength becoming the limiting factor.

Safety

For exercises like heavy deadlifts or rack pulls, where a secure grip is crucial for safety, lifting straps can provide an added level of support to avoid potential accidents or dropping weights.

Training Progression

Lifting straps can be useful in a progressive training program. You can use them to lift heavier weights during certain phases of your training and then gradually phase them out as your grip strength improves.

JerkFit Lifting Straps

JerkFit has created the most premium, most comfortable, durable and grippy lifting straps on the market with Death Grips.

They take 80% of the strain away from your forearms and are incredibly grippy. You can virtually lift your fingers off the bar and the grips whilst still hanging on.

If you want to make consistent, measurable gains at the gym or in the Box, you NEED a pair of lifting straps like DEATH GRIPS from JerkFit.

Simultaneously, you need to work on your grip strength, separately, to ensure you build that muscle for long term health, strength and vitality. You CAN and SHOULD do both.

Do that, and just watch how quickly you’ll be smashing through your PR’s on a regular basis. This will keep you motivated and coming back for more, and hopefully for years to come!

Make the commitment to your body, invest in a pair of Death Grips right now and save 20% at JerkFit.com.

Why Weak Grip Strength Negatively Impacts Exercises Such as the Deadlift and Pull Up

Weak grip strength can significantly impact your performance in deadlifts and pull-ups in several ways:

Reduced Lifting Capacity: In deadlifts, a weak grip may limit the weight you can lift since your hands may give out before your larger muscle groups do. It can hinder your ability to lift heavy loads and may prevent you from fully engaging your back, glutes, and hamstrings during the lift.

Shortened Sets and Reps: Weak grip strength can lead to early fatigue during pull-ups. If your grip gives out before your back and arm muscles are fully exhausted, you won’t be able to complete the desired number of repetitions, limiting the effectiveness of the exercise.

Increased Risk of Injury: With weak grip strength, you may struggle to maintain a secure grip on the bar during deadlifts or pull-ups. This can lead to slipping, causing accidents and potential injuries like muscle strains, sprains, or even falls.

Poor Form: As your grip weakens during the exercises, you might resort to using improper form to compensate. For example, you might excessively use your shoulders or back muscles instead of relying on a strong grip to support the movement. This can lead to imbalances and injuries over time.

Slower Progression: If your grip strength lags behind your overall strength development, it will be challenging to progress in deadlifts and pull-ups. As a result, your strength gains may plateau or advance at a slower rate.

Missed Training Opportunities: Weak grip strength can limit your ability to perform compound exercises like deadlifts and pull-ups, which are essential for overall strength and muscle development. If you avoid these exercises due to grip limitations, you might miss out on their numerous benefits.

To address weak grip strength and improve your performance in deadlifts and pull-ups, you can incorporate specific grip-strengthening exercises into your routine and use lifting straps.

Why Should You Train Your Grip Strength Separately?

Training your grip strength separately from your regular workouts can offer several benefits and advantages, even if you are already engaging in compound exercises that involve gripping. Here are some reasons why it’s beneficial to dedicate specific time to train your grip strength:

Targeted Focus: By dedicating a separate training session to grip strength, you can specifically target the muscles and tendons in your hands, wrists, and forearms without the distraction of other exercises. This targeted focus allows you to fully concentrate on improving grip strength.

Avoiding Overload: Compound exercises like deadlifts, pull-ups, and rows are excellent for developing overall strength, but they can also put a lot of stress on the body, including the grip. Training grip strength separately allows you to avoid overloading the grip during compound movements, reducing the risk of overuse injuries.

Progressive Overload: When training grip strength separately, you can design a progressive program that gradually increases the resistance and difficulty of grip exercises over time. This progressive overload helps to continually challenge and strengthen your grip muscles.

Balanced Development: Some individuals may find that their grip strength lags behind their overall strength in compound exercises. Training grip strength separately helps ensure balanced development and prevents weak grip strength from limiting progress in other lifts.

Customization: Separating grip training allows you to customize the exercises and intensity according to your specific needs and goals. You can incorporate various grip-strengthening techniques, such as thick-bar training, plate pinches, finger curls, and timed holds.

Flexibility in Workout Structure: If you train grip strength separately, you have more flexibility in structuring your regular workouts. You won’t have to worry about grip fatigue affecting your performance in other lifts, allowing you to optimize your training.

Injury Prevention: A well-rounded grip training program can help prevent injuries related to the hands, wrists, and forearms. By strengthening the muscles and tendons involved in gripping, you create a more resilient and injury-resistant grip.

Transfer to Other Activities: Developing strong grip strength through dedicated training can positively impact various daily activities and sports that require a powerful grip, such as carrying heavy objects, participating in rock climbing, or engaging in martial arts.

Remember that grip strength is an essential component of overall strength and functional fitness. Integrating specific grip training into your routine ensures that you maintain balanced strength development and enjoy the numerous benefits of a powerful grip in various aspects of your life.

Pavel Tsatsouline on Grip Strength

Pavel Tsatsouline is a well-known strength and conditioning coach, author, and former Soviet Special Forces physical training instructor.

He is widely recognized for popularizing Russian training techniques and bringing kettlebell training to the United States in the late 1990s. Pavel has authored several books on strength training and is considered one of the leading experts in the field.

Pavel Tsatsouline emphasizes the importance of grip strength for several reasons:

Transference to Overall Strength: According to Pavel, grip strength has a significant impact on overall strength. He believes that a stronger grip allows you to lift heavier weights in exercises like deadlifts, pull-ups, and rows, thus promoting greater muscle and strength gains in the entire body.

Functional Strength: Pavel is an advocate of functional strength training, which focuses on improving strength for real-life activities and sports. Grip strength is a fundamental aspect of functional strength as it is required in many daily activities, from carrying heavy objects to opening jars.

Injury Prevention: A strong grip can help stabilize your wrists and forearms during various exercises, reducing the risk of injuries. It provides additional support and control during movements that involve the hands and upper body.

Improved Performance in Sports: Many sports and activities, such as rock climbing, martial arts, and wrestling, require a powerful grip. By developing grip strength, athletes can enhance their performance and skill in these disciplines.

Enhanced Mental Toughness: Pavel believes that grip strength training can also have mental benefits. He argues that pushing through challenging grip exercises builds mental resilience and tenacity, which can carry over to other aspects of life.

To develop grip strength, Pavel Tsatsouline recommends various techniques, including using thick-handled implements, training with kettlebells, performing exercises with timed holds, and incorporating grip-specific exercises like towel pull-ups and plate pinches.

Overall, Pavel Tsatsouline’s teachings have had a significant impact on the fitness world, particularly in the realm of grip strength training. His approach to strength training, backed by his experiences and expertise, has influenced many athletes, coaches, and fitness enthusiasts worldwide.

Why are Dead Hangs Such a Great Way to Train Grip Strength?

Dead hangs are an excellent way to train grip strength for several reasons:

Isometric Exercise

Dead hangs are a form of isometric exercise, which means the muscles are engaged without any significant change in length. When you perform a dead hang, you are holding onto a bar or other hanging implement without actively moving, which places a constant load on your grip muscles.

Source: Ketut Subiyanto on Pexels

This prolonged contraction helps build both strength and endurance in the muscles of your hands, wrists, and forearms.

Full Grip Activation

Dead hangs engage all the muscles in your hands and forearms, including the flexors, extensors, and stabilizing muscles. This comprehensive activation ensures a well-rounded grip workout that targets all aspects of grip strength.

Minimal Equipment

Dead hangs require minimal equipment – usually just a pull-up bar or any sturdy overhead structure. This makes them easily accessible for most people, whether at home, in the gym, or even outdoors.

Joint Stability

Dead hangs promote joint stability in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. As you hang, your body learns to stabilize and support your weight, leading to stronger and more resilient joints.

Injury Prevention

By training grip strength through dead hangs, you can help prevent injuries in the hands, wrists, and forearms. Developing a strong grip can enhance the integrity of the connective tissues and support the muscles, reducing the risk of strains and overuse injuries during other exercises or daily activities.

Improved Pull-Up Performance

Dead hangs are a natural progression toward performing pull-ups and chin-ups. As your grip strength improves, you’ll find it easier to hold onto the bar during these exercises, leading to better pull-up performance.

Functional Strength

Grip strength is a fundamental aspect of functional strength that translates into various daily activities and sports. Improving your grip strength through dead hangs can enhance your ability to carry heavy objects, climb, and perform various manual tasks.

Mental Toughness

Dead hangs can be mentally challenging, especially as you push your grip endurance limits. Staying focused and maintaining the hold helps build mental resilience and discipline.

When performing dead hangs, focus on keeping your shoulders engaged and down, and avoid excessive swinging or kipping. Start with shorter durations and gradually increase the time as your grip strength improves. Additionally, you can experiment with different grip positions, such as an overhand grip, underhand grip, or mixed grip (one hand overhand, one hand underhand), to vary the stress on different grip muscles.

What are the Muscles and Tendons of the Hands, Wrists and Forearms?

The hands, wrists, and forearms are comprised of a complex network of muscles and tendons that work together to facilitate various movements and actions. Here are some of the key muscles and tendons in these areas:

Muscles of the Hand

Thenar Muscles: Located at the base of the thumb, these muscles control thumb movements and contribute to grip strength.

The thenar muscles include:

  • Abductor pollicis brevis
  • Flexor pollicis brevis
  • Opponens pollicis

Hypothenar Muscles: Situated at the base of the little finger, these muscles assist in controlling the little finger and contribute to grip strength.

The hypothenar muscles include:

  • Abductor digiti minimi
  • Flexor digiti minimi brevis
  • Opponens digiti minimi

Interosseous Muscles: Found between the metacarpal bones of the hand, these muscles are responsible for finger adduction and abduction. There are four dorsal interossei and three palmar interossei muscles.

Lumbrical Muscles: These muscles originate from the tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus and assist in finger flexion at the metacarpophalangeal joints while extending the interphalangeal joints.

Muscles of the Wrist and Forearm

a. Flexor Muscles: These muscles are responsible for wrist and finger flexion. They are located on the anterior (palm side) of the forearm and include:

  • Flexor carpi radialis
  • Palmaris longus
  • Flexor carpi ulnaris
  • Flexor digitorum superficialis
  • Flexor digitorum profundus
  • Flexor pollicis longus

Extensor Muscles: These muscles control wrist and finger extension. They are located on the posterior (back side) of the forearm and include:

  • Extensor carpi radialis longus
  • Extensor carpi radialis brevis
  • Extensor carpi ulnaris
  • Extensor digitorum
  • Extensor digiti minimi
  • Extensor indicis
  • Extensor pollicis longus
  • Extensor pollicis brevis
  • Abductor pollicis longus
  • Extensor pollicis longus

Tendons

Tendons are tough, fibrous connective tissues that connect muscles to bones and transmit muscle forces to allow movement. In the hands, wrists, and forearms, there are numerous tendons that pass through the wrist and attach to the fingers, facilitating finger and wrist movements.

These muscles and tendons work together in a coordinated manner to allow precise movements and provide strength and stability to the hands, wrists, and forearms. Proper care and strengthening of these muscles and tendons are essential for maintaining hand and wrist health and optimizing performance in various activities.

The Best-Selling Fitness Equipment of 2022 Tested https://www.boxrox.com/the-best-selling-fitness-equipment-of-2022-tested/ Wed, 07 Dec 2022 18:30:00 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=175831 What was the best-selling fitness equipment of 2022? And are they any good? That is what the Buff Dudes set out to discover.

The Buff Dudes is a YouTube channel with over 2.5 million subscribers. Despite the name of the channel, brothers Hudson and Brandon White are not your stereotypical bro gym. They deliver clear information with a good background story while poking fun at how buffed they are.

They tested the best-selling fitness equipment of 2022 and, of course, made fun along the way together with their respective girlfriends. Check it out.

Best Selling Fitness Equipment of 2022 Tested

The Buff Dudes say these are the best-selling fitness equipment of 2022, however they do not say where this information is coming from. It could be from a quick google search, the best-selling fitness equipment of 2022 from Amazon, and it could also be focused on solely a single country.

From number 5 to 1, here are the best-selling fitness equipment of 2022.

5. U Shape Twister

The U Shape Twister is an arm exerciser in which you can train your biceps or triceps. It can also be used for your adductors in between your legs.

They gave it a 2 star review, saying it was something you might get excited about, but will not use once you get it.

4. The Power Ring

This is a small ring with a steel ball inside of it and you will use centrifugal force to move the ring around. It feels more like an isometric exercise and, in their view, this equipment would not be able to replace a dumbbell or a kettlebell for any exercise.

Also 2 star review out of 5.

3. Aqua Training Bag

This is a bag, you fill with water, and use as workout gear, kind of replacing a sandbag. Although the idea is to take this equipment for travels, the Buff Dudes say it would be difficult to fill this bag in a sink because of the way it is made.

3 stars out of 5.

The aqua training bag wants to replace the sandbag for some movements.

2. Abs Belt

The abs belt comes with a terrifying warning that, if you use the product incorrectly, it is “highly possible to cause death and severe injury.”

The belt had 18 levels of intensity, but the Buff Dudes could only manage to get to level 4, saying it is incredibly painful.

It received 1 out of 5 stars.

1. Hula Hoop Redux

This hula hoop promises to not fall off and, with only 30 minutes every day can reduce your waist. However, the Budd Dudes and Girls did not enjoy it, it fell off and it even broke while they were using it.

Needless to say, 1 star out of 5.

And those were the best-selling fitness equipment of 2022 tested. Click on the video below to see the Buff Dudes trying them out with their girlfriends.

Shaq Attaq (HQ4587, $180)

One of the biggest superheroes of all time takes over Reebok’s larger than life sneaker, the Shaq Attaq. Inspired by the Man of Steel himself, this version of the shoe pays homage to some of Superman’s most crucial superpowers from the translucent hardware on the shoe that references his x-ray vision to the ice outsole signifying his cold breath.

Available in unisex sizing from 5.5 – 13. There is also a

Classic Leather inspired by Superman available in kids sizing.

LX2200 (HQ4584, $110)

The reflective Bat emblem on the tongue of this LX2200 instantly gives away the Batman inspiration of this refreshed Reebok OG running silhouette. The sneaker embodies Batman’s impressive batsuit through several details including the foam moulded synthetics and debossing on the upper which represent the batsuit’s moulded and distressed armor, respectively. Available in unisex sizing from 2.5 -12.

Club C 85 (HQ4573, $110)

The Joker brings chaos to the Club C 85 from the inside of the shoe which is covered with graphics referencing his ear-piercing laughter to the tear away pieces of fabric on the upper that represent the many devious layers to his personality. To further allow the wearer to exemplify The Joker’s personality, the tongue features a hidden joker that can be removed and used as their calling card. Available in unisex sizing from 2.5 – 12.

Nano X2 (HQ4585, $150)

Source: Reebok

Wonder Woman’s impressive armour dictates the design of this version of Reebok’s most versatile training shoe yet, the Nano X2. The upper of the shoes incorporates a reflective light creating a similar effect to Wonder Woman’s deflecting bracelets and the rest of her suit’s legendary construction is noted on various leather and metal accents. The wearer is gifted with an extra set of reflective laces that are emblematic of Wonder Woman’s signature lasso of truth. Available in unisex sizing 4 – 13.

Freestyle Hi (HQ4572, $100)

The formidable Harley Quinn inspires one of Reebok’s most iconic female silhouettes, the Freestyle Hi. The upper includes graphics that reference a range of her accessories from her legendary mallet to her roller skates.

ReebokSource: Reebok

Bleeding from the heel to the white upper is a deep blue, very similar to the design of her favourite shirt. Available in women’s sizing 2.5 – 8.5.

Workout Plus (HQ4575, $100)

This glow-in-the-dark version of the Workout Plus brings Lex Luthor’s toxic kryptonite suit to sneakers. From the glowing outsole to the cracked, glow in the dark edges on the upper the shoe is sure to make the wearer feel invincible. The silhouette is finished off with a ring lace dubrae that mimics Lex’s powerful green kryptonite ring. Available in unisex sizing 2 – 14.

Paired with the footwear is a line of unisex apparel featuring a collection of graphic t-shirts and hoodies. Each piece incorporates iconic logos from the world of DC and highlights the good vs. evil theme present throughout the collection.

Nano X2 FroningSource: Reebok

Stemming from another successful competition season in which Froning earned ‘Fittest on Earth’ bragging rights once again within the Teams division, the Nano X2 Froning is specifically designed to be a super lightweight, highly functional game-day ready shoe.

Paying homage to the Froning family’s history and love for the automotive industry, like high speed racecars, the model is stripped down to be lighter, faster, and more powerful than any other training shoe on the market.

As the lightest weight Nano X2 range offering, coming in at just 10.4oz in a unisex size 9, the Nano X2 Froning is built for the competition floor while remaining versatile enough to support athletes across all training demands.

“Similar to any high-performance sport, speed and precision counts on the competition floor,” says Reebok athlete Rich Froning Jr. “You need a shoe that’s lightweight and powerful. We built the Nano X2 Froning for athletes looking to dominate the competition when every second counts.”

Source: Reebok

Notable Nano X2 Froning design and technical details include:

  • Lightest Nano X2 Offering: 10.4oz ounces / 7mm drop
  • Stripped-Down Design: a reinforced breathable open-mesh upper with perforated details makes the shoe ultra-lightweight and competition ready, removing unnecessary details.
  • Floatride Energy Foam Drop-In: provides a responsive and flexible forefoot for
    added speed, cushioning and support.

The Nano X2 Froning is available November 3rd on Reebok.com/NanoX2 and select retailers worldwide.

Pairs will be available in limited quantities in unisex sizing for $150 in two vivid colorways: Core Black / Pure Grey / Neon Cherry and Ftwr White / Neon Blue / Neon Cherry.

Reebok and National Geographic Reunite for Footwear Collection Inspired by Wild and Endangered Species https://www.boxrox.com/reebok-and-national-geographic-reunite-for-footwear-collection-inspired-by-wild-and-endangered-species/ Tue, 04 Oct 2022 12:18:54 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=172225 Reebok unveils a full family footwear capsule collection with National Geographic inspired by wild and endangered species and National Geographic’s award-winning visual storytelling. This announcement follows two drops from the brands that were released last year.

This collection celebrates some of the world’s most beautiful animals without using any animal-based products.

Reebok and National Geographic collaborated to honour and bring awareness to these creatures by creating uniquely blended patterns inspired by the animals and applying them to the upper of each shoe.

Included in the adults’ footwear collection are two colorways of the Nano X2 Grow, the latest iteration of Reebok’s award-winning Nano training shoe franchise, both of which are made with at least 50% plant-based materials.

Below are additional details regarding each shoe in the vegan footwear line:

Club C 85 Vegan (GW9471, $90)

This mismatched version of the Club C honours sixteen endangered species with the pattern pieces on each shoe dedicated to a different animal.

The bold expression is intended to bring awareness to the Galapagos Penguin, Black Rhino, Eastern Gorilla, Ring-tailed Lemur and Fiji Banded Iguana, among others. Available in unisex sizing.

Nano X2 Grow (H06291, $160)

The world’s most formidable species make their appearance on this version of the Nano X2 Grow.

The graphic on the upper combines patterns that resemble the Python Snake, Puffer Fish, Poison Dart Frog, Scorpion, Grizzly Bear and more. Available in unisex sizing.

Nano X2 Grow (H06290, $160)

The second Nano X2 Grow in this collection is inspired by the world’s biggest wild cats. The graphics and colours on the upper combine different patterns that pay homage to the Tiger, Cheetah and Jaguar. Available in unisex sizing.

Paired with the adult footwear are kids’ footwear models in preschool and grade school sizing. The kids’ shoes are available in two of Reebok’s most iconic lifestyle silhouettes, both of which feature graphic, fun uppers paying homage to the animals.

The Reebok and National Geographic collection will be available beginning today, October 4, 2022 at Reebok.com/national_geographic.

8 Gym Machines You Should Stop Using https://www.boxrox.com/8-gym-machines-you-should-stop-using/ Tue, 19 Jul 2022 17:36:00 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=168909 Utilising a machine to work out might sound like a good idea, but some of is best to avoid. Check out this list of 8 gym machines you should stop using.

If you believe that any machine inside a gym is safe and effective to use, think again. Some of them can do more harm than good and, unfortunately, a couple of them are really common among gym-goers. Max Posternak talked about some gym machines you should stop using.

Max Posternak is the founder of Gravity Transformation, a website focused on giving tips and training guidance for people looking to improve their fitness and lose weight. His YouTube channel has over 4.8 million subscribers.

Having a gym full of machines might be a good selling point for new members, but basic dumbbells, barbells and kettlebells are typically more effective than the complex machines you see at a regular gym.

Gym Machines You Should Stop Using

In the list below, Posternak says these machines you should perhaps avoid or, at least, change the way you use them.

1. Smith Machine

This machine is great for a couple of exercises, but some people use it as an alternative to exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses which are intended to be done with a regular barbell.

Due to the machine being locked in position, people tend to think it helps prevent injuries when performing the exercises mentioned above.

  • For bench presses – it is bad for your shoulders
  • For squats – it isn’t biomechanically natural as most people lean back against the bar

2. Hip Abduction and Adduction Machine

These machines are typically used to train the glutes and the inner thighs, but other alternatives are more effective such as squats and lunges.

“One immediate issue is that naturally, your body would never lift heavy loads this way in real life,” Posternak explains. Utilising these machines will overwork your TFL muscle and pull another muscle known as the IT band which leads to knee pain.

It also can contribute to lower back pain and it will not reduce your fat from the inner thighs.

3. Leg Press Machine

Leg Press MachineSource: Scott Webb / Pexels
Leg Machine

This doesn’t have to be on the list of gym machines you should stop using. What you need to do is change the way you use it, especially if you have lower back issues.

“When doing leg presses your lower back is pinned against the pad in a way where it becomes more and more difficult to maintain the natural lumbar curve as your knees bend and come closer to your chest.”

Posternak advises doing short reps in a limited range of motion. If you want to get a nice stretch, then choose to do squats, lunges, or Bulgarian split squats.

If you still want to use the leg press machine, choose to do it at the end of a leg workout and with one leg at a time, with the other leg staying down during the movement to maintain a neutral lumbar spine.

Read More: 7 Leg Press Mistakes and How to Fix Them

4. Torso Rotation Machine / Seated Twist Machine

If you want to avoid injuries to your spine, Posternak suggests staying away from this machine. If you do use it, limit the range of motion and use a lighter weight.

5. Lat Pulldown Behind the Head

gym machines you should stop using

There are no additional muscle-building benefits of doing this exercise behind the head. In fact, by pulling behind the head, you will have to lighten the weight load because your back and shoulders are weaker in that position.

You may also damage your rotator cuff by pulling or pressing behind the head.

6. Seated Crunch Machine

Another on the list of gym machines you should avoid is the seated crunch machine. It will definitely target your ab, but this one is simply not as effective as other exercises such as reverse crunches, stability ball crunches and decline sit-ups.

7. Selectoriser Chest Press / Shoulder Press Machines

These are older machines that do not allow you to do unilateral training. You would have to press both handles at the same time.

“Also, the path of these old machines is very different and bad for your joints,” Posternak says. These old machines will make you move weights in a straight line and will irritate and likely injure your shoulders.

8. Butt Blaster Machine

Mostly used by women, this machine does not target your glutes effectively. When using this machine, most people will likely target their hamstrings instead of their butt.

You will get better glutes by doing barbell squats and dumbbell lunges.

Any questions on which gym machines you should stop using? Check out Posternak’s video below.

CGM for Athletes – Can Continuous Glucose Monitoring Help Performance? https://www.boxrox.com/cgm-for-athletes-continuous-glucose-monitoring/ Sun, 24 Apr 2022 17:30:00 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=164005 Once reserved for diabetics, athletes are using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to gather more information, but can these glucose monitors deliver on their promise of improving performance?

Continuous glucose monitors are intrinsically reserved for nutrition, but the information it gathers could help athletes of any sport make different if not better decisions when it comes to eating habits.

Find out if CGM is for you.

What Is Continuous Glucose Monitoring

You have probably seen it in the past. Someone with an adhesive patch about 3 centimetres (1 inch) is usually glued to the back of a person’s upper arm, but not exclusively. That adhesive patch has a filament embedded into the person’s flesh. This is the continuous glucose monitor.

This technological device is designed to track real-time blood sugar (glucose) levels in diabetics due to the nature of their health condition.

Connected to an App or another handheld device, the CGM delivers instant data about the sugar spike in the blood.

Athletes Are Turning to CGM

Although continuous glucose monitoring is necessary to prevent diabetics from having health complications, over the past few years, this device has been getting traction in the fitness world.

The fact that you can get instant data about the sugar level in the blood made numerous companies, such as Supersapiens and Abott, turned to developing CGM devices specifically for athletes.

In 2020, Jake Smith utilised the information his CGM gave him the week before running a half-marathon and found out how to fuel his body properly. At the World Half-Marathon Championships in Poland, he flew low and broke Steve Jones’ long-standing Welsh record with a new PR of 1:00:31 – his number sits third overall on the all-time British list for the distance.

CrossFit athletes Josh Bridges and Sam Briggs are legends in the sport and both also utilise CGM, although they don’t have diabetes.

Emma McQuaid, another CrossFit athlete and pupil of Sam Briggs, told BOXROX she decided to begin using CGM to change her eating habits and achieve peak performance.

“There are some foods that I will avoid eating before training because it’ll give me a massive spike, then a massive low, so I’m trying to find that balance of foods where it keeps my glucose levels nice and level,” McQuaid said.

In November 2021, Kristian Blummenfelt broke the world record for fastest Ironman, although later the record was taken off from the official webpage due to the down-current on Cozumel island. And yes, he makes use of the CGM device in his favour as well.

Is CGM Right For You?

If you are serious about your sport, probably yes. Continuous glucose monitoring will show your blood sugar levels at intervals and you can use this information to your advantage. The body runs on glucose and a CGM would give you real-time insight into how well fuelled you are and what you can do to be better prepared next time.

Although it can be beneficial for nearly any athlete, sports that cause the body to rely on glycogen as an energy source are ideal such as endurance sports (triathlon or long-distance swimming) and intermittent sprint sports (team games such as soccer and hockey).

Source: Jeffrey F Lin / Unsplash

In endurance athletes, high muscle glycogen content can increase the time to fatigue during exertion. In intermittent sprint exercises, athletes can spend more time at higher intensity levels and improve their performance when they have high levels of glycogen.

However, if you are a regular gym-goer, chances are that the CGM will not add weight plates to your barbell the next time you go for a deadlift PR, for example.

Although some believe that the extra data that CGM devices provide you are simply not worth analysing, you can choose to use more information for your benefit – if not for achieving peak performance, then to improve your overall health so you can sleep better and, ultimately, recover faster from any physical activity.

“Once you kind of get a baseline of this [reading the data] and this works, then you don’t need to do it for a while, but I’ll always do it two weeks leading into a competition now,” Emma McQuaid explained.

You can check the story of Michel Jean and Delaney Wade, two teenage CrossFit athletes who competed at the highest level in 2021 while being diagnosed with diabetes.

FAQ

Can you work out with a glucose monitor?

Yes. Regardless of what sports activity you plan on doing, CGM devices are water-resistant and sturdy.

Can a continuous glucose monitor help with weight loss?

There is insufficient data to prove or disprove this. Although some say that CGMs do not help people lose weight, others believe that the extra information you get helps you make better nutritional decisions, thus losing weight.

Can CGM help me achieve peak performance?

Yes. If you are preparing for a competition, a continuous glucose monitoring device can give you valuable information if you are properly fuelled or if you need to dial in (or dial back) on your nutrition to keep your body with the necessary amount of energy for the competition.

Is it painful to have a CGM on your arm or stomach?

Not for most people. The filament that goes into your skin and that reads your glucose level is usually 5 millimetres long and you feel less than a needle, for example. However uncommon, there could be skin irritation in the area to which you adhere the CGM.

Your Wrist Heart Rate Monitor Data Seems Wrong? It Probably Is https://www.boxrox.com/wrist-heart-rate-monitor-data-isnt-always-accurate/ Sat, 02 Apr 2022 13:30:00 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=162592 Have you ever been in the middle of a workout and looked down at your watch to find an unexpected number in the heart rate data field? I know I have.

“There’s no way I’m beating at 180,” I’ll think. And it turns out, my thoughts were probably right. Data from your wrist heart rate monitor is not always reliable.

Tracking your heart rate data is interesting because it can tell you a lot about your fitness and general health.

Especially when you exercise, knowing your heart rate can tell you whether you’re working close to your maximum or if you could push a little harder. Conversely, it can also tell you if you’re working too hard during a training session that was meant to be easy.

While your heart rate is affected by variables such as sleep and stress, it is still a very reliable metric to measure exercise intensity at any given time. Only applicable, though, if the data is accurate.

How do wrist heart rate monitors work?

To understand why heart rate data from your new sports watch or fitness tracker isn’t always reliable, it’s good to know what optical heart rate monitors (the type you find in wrist-worn tech) do to read the speed at which your heart is beating.

The number you see on your screen, the data format, is beats per minute.

Sports watch with optical monitor displays heart rateSource: Artur Łuczka on Unsplash

Wrist-worn heart rate monitors work by shining a light – that green pulsing light you see when you take it off – into your blood vessels and detecting the changes in blood volume every time your heart beats.

How does this actually work, you ask? Every time your heart beats, it pushes blood through your body. By shining a green light to the capillary veins in your wrist, your fitness tracker can then use a sensor to detect the reflected light and see how fast your blood is pumping.

While the data is processed alongside motion information (detected by your tracker’s accelerometer), the algorithms don’t always produce 100% reliable pulse readings.

Wrist heart rate monitor accuracy

Wrist-worn devices will always be at a disadvantage compared to chest straps simply because the latter sit closer to the heart (the source of the information), allowing them to capture a stronger signal.

No matter how good the tech is, the further you are from the data source the less reliable the information becomes.

However, it’s important to know that wrist heart rate monitors are generally accurate, especially when at rest or during activities that don’t involve a lot of movement such as walking or yoga. Algorithms have come a long way since wrist-worn fitness trackers started to become popular.

Nevertheless, there are still a handful of factors that can affect accuracy and a few reasons why you can’t always trust the data.

Movement can disrupt the accuracy of your optical heart rate monitor for a handful of reasons:

  • Movement influences how the blood moves around in your body, especially when fast-paced.
  • If you wear your tracker slightly loose, movement can shift it around and create space between the sensor and your skin, which can prevent data from being captured.
  • The algorithm might pick up on the wrong signal when the movement’s cadence or rhythm are similar to the speed at which your heart beats.

A 2019 study from the Cardiovascular diagnosis and therapy journal measured the accuracy of commercially available heart rate monitors at different running speeds. The study, which is free to read online, found that while wrist-worn heart rate monitors were accurate at rest, their accuracy decreased as intensity increased.

While the study had some limitations – indoor treadmill running can’t necessarily be compared to running outdoors with varying terrain and different arm motions – the findings are supported by a 2020 study that analysed accuracy of optical sensors for athletes in different age ranges.

The study, led by Hsueh-Wen Chow, found that while optical heart rate sensors generally produce accurate readings irrespective of the age of the user, they do have a tendency to produce extreme readings in some cases.

athlete looks at wrist watch with optical heart rate monitorSource: dusan jovic on Unsplash

Because optical heart rate monitors pick up changes in your blood volume, the algorithm within your watch has to detect what is your actual blood flow and what are other signals that might influence how much light gets reflected back to the sensor.

A common error is seen when running, as the repeating signal of running cadence can easily be mistaken for a heart rate measurement the algorithm might expect (e.g., 160 steps per minute vs 160 beats per minute).

As movements become erratic and your heart rate increases, the devices tend to become less accurate, a 2019 study found.

Read more: Fat Burning Heart Rate: Can you Exercise at a Certain Intensity to Burn Maximum Fat?

Why is heart rate data from wrist monitors wrong?

To summarise, there’s a handful of reasons why wrist optical heart rate sensors are at a disadvantage compared to chest straps:

  • They sit relatively far away from the source of data
  • Reliable readings rely on little noise
  • They might detect the wrong signal
  • Movement of sensor can disrupt accuracy

If you want to measure your heart rate with close to 100% accuracy or have very specific goals to meet with your fitness training, a chest strap is the way to go.

However, if you don’t care about perfect accuracy or find chest straps uncomfortable (I know I did), a wrist heart rate monitor will do a good enough job most of the time. Additionally, they can be worn all day long, while you’d generally take your chest strap off as soon as you finish training.

Whether or not you should use and trust your fitness tracker comes down to your individual goals as an athlete. If you find value in fitness trackers and inaccurate heart rate data is not a deal breaker for you, then you know to take readings with a pinch of salt. When they do seem wrong, you’re probably right.

Who are Whoop?

Whoop are interested in helping people achieve their potential.

Delve deeper into their story.

“I grew up loving sports and exercise. Many of my childhood heroes were athletes. I was recruited to Harvard and became Captain of the Men’s Varsity Squash Team.

As a D1 athlete, I was amazed by how little I knew about my body. I would train for 3 hours a day with my teammates without knowing what gains I made, I was surrounded by athletes, myself included, who overtrained, misinterpreted fitness peaks, underestimated recovery and sleep, and got injured. Being prepared for game day often seemed… random.

I became inspired by a simple idea: Humans, especially athletes, could optimize their daily performance. Optimizing performance was not a random sequence of events and decisions, but rather a systematic approach to understanding your body.

We believe that the data we’re collecting on athletes is unprecedented, both in its sophistication and scale.

No physiological studies have ever occurred on this magnitude. WHOOP benefits from the fact that athletes also have tangible performance data (wins/losses, batting average, time trials, etc) across sports. We want to share this data.

When To Wear Lifting Shoes (Lifters) and Why You Should and Shouldn’t https://www.boxrox.com/when-to-wear-lifting-shoes-lifters/ Sun, 23 Jan 2022 16:05:00 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=157291 When to wear lifting shoes? If you want the maximum performance output – that is to lift the heaviest weight – lifting shoes are an obvious tool to help you achieve your goal.

Footwear is widely used to enhance your performance in many sports. Whether it’s running, track and field, tennis, rugby, football; shoes are part of what makes us faster, better, and stronger.

The same is true for weightlifting, and this is where lifting shoes, or lifters, come in.

woman in weightlifting shoes loads up barbell during competition

When to wear lifting shoes?

Lifting shoes enhance your body’s stability and positions. They are a great way to support your performance when you want to push hard.

Their purpose is to allow you to lift the most weight possible, and they achieve that by lightening the load on your ankles, improving your posture, and giving your feet a more stable position.

They prevent your ankle from rolling, allow you to spread and transfer force on a wider surface, and aid in achieving consistent movement patterns. Because many people also suffer from poor mechanics and limited mobility, lifting shoes can also help you increase your squat depth and the degree of upright posture.

Lifters are especially beneficial for exercises that involve squatting with heavy weights, such as front and back squats, cleans, and snatches.

If your goals include chasing the highest level of performance when it comes to lifting, then lifters are essential. However, if you’re simply lifting weights for personal gains, tweaking the intensity, weights, and rep ranges of your workouts can provide a very similar stimulus and wearing flat sole shoes is a good alternative.

Additionally, an in-depth look into 25 peer-reviewed studies analysing lifting footwear found that there’s no “one size fits all” solution and experimentation is required to choose your shoes for weightlifting.

Why you shouldn’t wear lifting shoes all the time

To make sure that joints such as your ankles, knees, and hips stay strong, balanced, and healthy, you’ll want to make sure you don’t always lift with aid.

Lifters can mask movement imbalances or deficiencies, which ultimately you’ll have to address not only to improve your performance but to stay healthy.

Moreover, barefoot lifting can provide benefits such as greater muscle activation in the feet and ankles, and can improve your coordination.

As with many aspects of fitness, you shouldn’t fully commit to one or the other, but include a well-rounded balance in your training. Our advice is for you to not do all your lifting with lifting shoes or never wear shoes at all, but rather to include both in your training, as both have unique benefits.

How Useful Is Wearable Tech for CrossFit and Why? https://www.boxrox.com/how-useful-is-wearable-tech-for-crossfit-and-why/ Tue, 23 Nov 2021 13:05:00 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=151755 There has been a boom in wearable tech in the last handful of years, with wearable fitness tracker companies springing up everywhere offering devices to track your workouts, sleep, heart rate, steps, and countless other metrics.

While a great deal of this data can be incredibly useful – and much of it was only accessible through expensive or complicated procedures not long ago – it can be hard to interpret the information and know exactly what to do about it.

Therefore, we delve into wearable tech for CrossFit and how it might benefit or damage our performance.

Is Wearable Tech for CrossFit Useful and Why?

There are many wearables out there for CrossFit athletes, they include:

  • Garmin watches
  • Whoop straps
  • Oura rings
  • Apple watches

Of course, all these brands claim they have something unique to offer you; information you need to give your performance and day-to-day life a boost. But do you really need them?

athlete emma mcquaid sprintsSource: Photo courtesy of CrossFit Inc.

Wearable tech for CrossFit benefits

  • Previously hard-to-access data made available: data on your sleep, heart rate, respiration, activity levels, etc. is now easily accessible without the need to go to a doctor or specialist. This can help us better understand which areas or aspects of our lives to improve on if we want to, with the most obvious example being sleep.
  • Help you stay accountable for activity levels: sometimes we get so carried away with what we’re doing that we don’t realise we’ve barely stood up all day or our steps haven’t even reached a thousand as the evening rolls around. Wearable tech can help you stay accountable to your daily activity levels from the moment you get up to when you go to sleep.
  • Gain insights and perspective through journaling: the excuses we make on a daily basis – whether it’s a late night, an evening drink, a skipped workout – might feel (and can be) minor in the moment, but looking back at the data from the last month can help you gain perspective. Maybe you’ve gone to bed later than planned five out of seven days a week in the last 30 days without you realising, but looking back on the data you can see this is a less obvious area you could improve on.

Wearable tech for CrossFit limitations and drawbacks

  • Data can be hard to understand: it’s one thing to have a lot of information, but a completely different one to know what to do with/about it. Our bodies are complicated, and endless factors can influence how we feel on a day-to-day basis, so it can be really hard to read and understand the data we receive.
  • Hyperawareness: it is possible that sometimes you read too much into the data and become obsessive about variables that, as mentioned above, are influenced by more than one thing. Becoming a slave to the data isn’t a good thing. The algorithms behind wearable tech aren’t not perfect, so if you become so fixated on the data you receive from it that you let it decide what you’re doing, instead of listening to your body, it no longer presents a benefit. Ideally, wearable tech should just provide guidance.
  • Activity tracking isn’t always a good representation of your workout: because all wearable tech bases its strain or intensity score on your cardiovascular output (how long did you keep a high heart rate for), the data they produce can be unreliable and might not be representative of your effort if you did short, high intensity workouts. This is because, as effective as they might be, they don’t keep a high heart rate for long enough. There are many ways to strain the body, but wearables only really pick up on your heart rate.
  • Wearable tech is still growing: there is a big gap in what these devices are able to measure between different sports. The algorithms are constantly growing and being updated; however, they are still in their infancy and their capabilities are limited. Specifically for CrossFit, the intensity of workouts is still misunderstood in the algorithm as a very light session.

A CrossFit coach’s opinions on wearable technology

Ben Dziwulski, the coach behind the CrossFit training programs at WODprep, recently released a video discussing this exact topic. Watch it below:

Wearable tech for CrossFit: do you need it?

The answer on whether you need wearable tech or not for CrossFit will depend on each individual, and whether you think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Wearable tech can provide a ton of useful data not only on your activities but also during day-to-day life, but its algorithms are not a replacement for professional advice.

If you understand how to use these tools to your advantage, they can provide really interesting data you can then act on. But are they indispensable for training? Absolutely not.

They send direct vibrating pulses through your muscles. According to a study in the Journal of Clinical & Diagnostic Research, vibration therapy and traditional massage are both effective at reducing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

But in addition to combatting pain, vibration therapy also proves helpful in decreasing the levels of lactic acid in your body post workout.

Helping your Muscles Grow

This tool will also help you speed up and optimise the muscle growth process.

Why growth?

During strenuous exercise we create chemical shifts in the muscle cells. These shifts are normal but can interrupt contractile function. When muscle fibres contract, sometimes they do not relax fully and we get cramping and restricted muscles. Massage guns help counter these effects and speed up the recovery process, thus accelerating up and optimising the muscle growth process.

Cramp may not always occur but over time the muscle tissue loses quality. This can eventually cause tightness and pain.

In order to prevent this we can use stretching and myofascial release techniques like the massage gun to break up the fibres and trigger points that form. We can also perform mobility exercises to maintain good movement in our joints and prevent muscles from becoming tight and restrictive.

Recovery Methods after Exercise

Massage Gun: A good session with the KRFTWORK massage gun is always effective at hitting awkward spots. Once you use a massage gun (which is 10 times cheaper than visiting your therapist) you break those knots and release a much needed stream of blood flow in order to expedite recovery and growth.

Stretching and Mobility exercises: These should be performed on a daily basis in conjunction with your massage gun. When we hold certain positions for long periods of time our muscles become tight and can become an injury risk (think sitting in a chair in an office all day). By constantly maintaining good tissue length and joint mobility we ensure proper functional movement.

Choosing the Right Recovery Tools for You

The KRAFTGUN Force is by far one of the best massage guns ever made. It uses the latest brushless motor with a unique patented shape that lets you hold it in 4 different positions.

Why should you care about a brushless motor?

The main difference between brushless or brushed drill motors is that the brushed variants are made of carbon while the brushless units use magnets to generate power. It results in less noise and last almost 10 times longer than other variants.

The motor is 24V and it can reach over 60lbs of stall force and brushless motors are generally more powerful overall. Good news for your recovery!

How to Use Massage Guns

  1. Start slow. Massage guns can be really powerful, so be careful, especially if you’re already sore. “I start all my athletes on the lowest setting and increase from there.”
  2. Avoid bone. If you hammer away at a bone, you likely won’t cause any damage, but it’s not going to be comfortable. Instead, Orendorf suggests starting on the larger muscle groups, like your glutes, quads, calves, lats and traps until you get the hang of navigating the gun. He offers this pro tip: “Use your other hand as a guide to help identify bony sections to avoid.”
  3. Keep it moving. “Make sure you’re not pressing too hard or staying in one spot for too long,” says Orendorf. “You can easily create more harm than good. Keep the gun moving for the best results.”
  4. More is not better. While a 90-minute massage by actual human hands can feel amazing, you don’t need 90 minutes of gun work. Focus on each body part for a few minutes before moving on to something else. This is enough time to get the full benefit of the treatment without causing trauma or discomfort to the area.

There are many other advantages of the KRAFTGUN Force massage gun

Ease of Use

Thanks to the patented design, you can easily reach your lower back without stretching your arm. Personally, I found this incredibly useful for working the back, hamstrings after deadlifting and quads following squatting.

Super Long Battery Life

I hate charging my devices, that’s why I love the KRAFTGUN Force, as you only need to charge it once a month

The KRAFTGUN is powered by Samsung, and a single charge can last up to 3 hours (when using it 6-7 min a day, it’ll last 30 days on a single charge). Also, it’s super fast to charge (less than 90 min from 0% to 50%).

The KRAFTGUN Offer

There are plenty of cheap ones out there. However, you need a real tool, something that can reach those deep layers and get rid of your knots and speed up blood flow (which results in faster recovery and growth).

The high-end massage guns with similar power and built quality cost about $600-$800.

KRAFTGUN did something amazing in order to retail theirs for only $489. They’re doing their entire sales DIRECT TO CONSUMER.

Not only you won’t find it on the shelves of BestBuy and Walmart, you won’t even find it at Amazon or eBay. That’s how they’ve managed to take a $700 massage gun and retail it for only $489.

And the best part about it? You’ll have 60 days to try and return it for a full refund.

You’ll have 60 days to open the box, test the KRAFTGUN on yourself or your partner, and still return it for a full refund. Plus, if you live in the US, KRAFTGUN would even pay for the return (that’s how confident they’re in the new Force, and if you ask me, for a good reason).

Why Massage Guns Should be in Every Athlete’s Recovery Toolkit https://www.boxrox.com/why-massage-guns-should-be-in-every-athletes-recovery-toolkit/ Wed, 23 Sep 2020 08:17:16 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=104141 When massage was used on ancient Olympic athletes as early as 776 BC, it’s possible the practitioners and athletes themselves could not prove the effectiveness of massage. But here’s what they did know: after massage, they felt and performed better.

Massage is an ancient practice that works — that’s why it’s used to this day and why numerous studies have now proven how effective it really is.

It’s especially beneficial for athletes and anyone with a training regimen, as it reduces recovery times and eases soreness. With today’s technology, massage is available in your own home — and you can do it yourself.

Why Recovery Matters

In the world of athleticism, recovery is the third and equally-important pillar of an athlete’s training regimen — the other two being diet and exercise. Without adequate recovery, our ligaments and bones can become overworked, strained, and eventually, they can get to the point of an athlete’s worst nightmare — a bench-worthy injury. And besides injury prevention, recovery is needed to regenerate tissues and bounce back quickly from strenuous exercises.

But what does the word “recovery” really mean for athletes? An everyday person sore from a long hike the day prior might just need a day or two of sinking into the couch with Netflix for adequate recovery. But most athletes in training don’t have the luxury of powering down for an entire day, let alone two. For an athlete to recover as quickly as possible and be ready for their next game or training day, they need the tools and competitive advantage that the professionals swear by.

Specifically, the focus of recovery for athletes includes:

  • Enhanced circulation to oxygenate and provide nutrients to overworked areas — this lets the body heal itself at lightning speed
  • Adequate sleep and nutrition (athletes need an average of an extra hour of sleep per night)
  • Lymphatic waste removal
  • Stimulation for the repair of microscopic tears incurred during exercise
  • Preventative maintenance: pre-workout targeting for injury protection

There’s no one-size-fits all when it comes to recovery — it’s a specific science, specific to each workout and each body. Physiologically, some people need more sleep than others. Others may benefit from certain types of nutrient rich foods that other bodies would reject. However, one thing that works well across the board when it comes to athletic recovery is massage — and more specifically (and more conveniently), massage guns.

The Ekrin B37 Massage Gun

sports massage gun

Ekrin Athletic’s new handheld B37 percussive massage gun is one of the newest and best massage guns to hit the market — at nearly half the price of other industry-leading massage guns.

This little device packs quite a punch. It’s unique design provides unlimited reach, and it comes loaded with features that, surprisingly, flush out a lot of competing look-alikes.

Here’s the gist of the B37:

  • Sturdy travel case with cordless massager, 4 attachments, and charger
  • Brushless motor to combat noise and overheating
  • Five speed settings, ranging from 1400 to 3200 RPM
  • Ergonomic design with 15° angled handle
  • Quiet Glide noise reduction technology
  • Lifetime warranty
  • 56 lbs of stall force at top speed
  • Over 5 hours of battery life when in use

Within seconds of use, Ekrin’s B37 “activates” or wakes up muscles for the perfect pre-workout warm up.  For post-workout recovery, powerful percussions treat sore muscles and overworked hotspots, penetrating deep into tissue fibers.  This allows the body to flush out potentially damaging scar tissue while increasing recovery times.

Athletes typically use their massager guns every day, for 5-15 minutes pre and post-workout. There’s no “waiting game” or “results in weeks” — the Ekrin B37 helps heal muscles and drive out soreness from the moment you start using it, which means the effects are immediate.

Massage Guns and Recovery 101

Not every athlete — professional or otherwise — has the time or even the money to have a masseuse work their magic before and after each day of exercise. But massage guns have made their way into gym lockers and homes across the world, and they’re being used to help athletes achieve peak performance and snap back into training mode much faster.

You know what a massage gun is, but more importantly, you need to know exactly what it can do. Let’s go over this in a little more detail.

What Do Percussive Massagers Do?

Percussive massagers focus on five primary areas. However, they can go beyond what’s listed and are an excellent resource for athletic and even everyday recovery.

Repetitive motion. Whether you’re a baseball pitcher with an overworked shoulder or a runner with sore calves, massage guns are game changers for areas that incur repetitive damage. Overused, hardened fascia is loosened and relaxed, helping to prevent injury.

Circulation. Stimulating blood flow before and after exercise boosts performance and helps regenerate tissues faster after training. Increased circulation also helps regulate sleep patterns.

Scarring. A lot of internal scarring can build up over time. If not treated, these miniature bumps and scars can impair movement and range of motion, and, if significant enough, can even cause injuries. Massage guns break down internal scarring and allow muscles to function properly again.

Lymphatic Drainage. Our lymphatic systems activate after percussive massage and help to drive out biochemical waste that can impede performance and recovery times.

Soreness. One of the more noticeable effects of percussive massagers is decreased soreness as well as cutting down the clock on how long soreness lasts. DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) is a particularly difficult phenomenon for athletes, and if it’s bad enough, it can confine someone to bed — and let’s face it, we’ve all been there.

Style, Speed and Performance – Functional Fitness Running Workouts for Ambitious Athletes https://www.boxrox.com/running-workouts-nike-athleisure-wear/ Thu, 17 Sep 2020 14:02:12 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=110504 The functional fitness running workouts in this Editorial will help you to enhance your conditioning, health and performance, whilst providing the right equipment to maximise results and aesthetics both in the Box and out on the track.

A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE

Nike have a long history of designing products that break the mould when it comes to both style and performance.  It was in their shoe – the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly 4% – that the Breaking2 project was realised…

“Eliud Kipchoge’s dream to break the 2-hour marathon barrier once seemed crazy, but with a 1:59:40 finish on October 12, 2019, he proved that if you are relentless in pursuing a goal, anything is possible.”

Eliud’s 2019 success had been years in the making. In his teens and early 20s, he was a five-time World Champion at the 5,000m. In 2012, he switched to road running and subsequently became a four-time London marathon winner and the Olympic marathon champion in 2016.

In 2017, he teamed up with Nike for his first sub-two-hour attempt that was chronicled in the documentary Breaking2. Eliud missed his mark by 26 seconds that day, but that attempt and everything he learned from it helped Eliud realise his dream of running a marathon in under two hours two years later.

Add these functional fitness running workouts into your training and start achieving your goals and dreams.

RUNNING WORKOUT 1

6 Rounds For Time of:

  • 800 meters run at 5K race pace

Jog 200-meters between reps.

This is a good benchmark workout that can be repeated throughout your training cycle. The workout breaks up your race pace into manageable chunks, and if you repeat the workout after a handful of training weeks you’re bound to see progress. Remember to track your progress.

RUNNING WORKOUT 2

6 Rounds for Time of:

  • 200m Sprint
  • 200m Jog

Sprint as fast as possible for the first 200m, then use the second 200m to recover; there should be a clear difference between the two efforts. Your heart rate will stay elevated throughout this session, but you should be able to control your breathing during the second part.

There’s no built in rest as such in this session, you should keep moving until you finish the six reps. This is a tough workout but will work wonders for your endurance.

WORKOUT 3

For Time (and Quality) Run:

  • 200m
  • 400m
  • 600m
  • 800m
  • 1000m
  • 800m
  • 600m
  • 400m
  • 200m

120 seconds rest between sets

Each of these reps should be run at the same intensity, so they should all feel similarly hard. This means both 200m reps should be the same pace, but faster than any other reps, and the 1000m rep should be the slowest rep but you should still work hard for it.

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37

The new and improved Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 is a bespoke running shoe designed to help runners of every level reach their goals.

This is not only a claim, the Pegasus 37 features an all-new forefoot cushioning unit and foam for maximum responsiveness.

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 features a Zoom Air bag strategically placed in the forefoot. This airbag is thicker than the one in the previous version, providing more responsiveness with every stride.

The Zoom Air bag women’s version of the Pegasus 37 has been tuned to about 15 PSI versus 20 PSI in the men’s shoe. This means the reduced air pressure provides a milder stride for women – a feature long asked for – and a stiffer ride for men.

MEN’S PEGASUS 37

Nike is well-known for breaking the limits of what’s been thought is possible within shoe technology.

For the first time in the Pegasus, Nike used React foam throughout. This foam is incredibly light and springy, and also Nike’s most durable. The shoe is breathable, stretches in areas where your foot needs to bend and provides structure in the areas where runners need durability.

WOMEN’S PEGASUS 37

The Nike Pegasus, born around four decades ago, has been worn by everyday and elite runners alike. Athletes love the fit, durability, and responsiveness this shoe has delivered year after year.

Serious runners wear this shoe all the time, yet the Pegasus 37 is a great all-round sneaker. It is one of Nike’s signature sneakers that’s had a lot of crossover success into the lifestyle segment.

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 will last for miles.

NIKE AIR SHOP

The Air Max, a classic Nike shoe introduced to the market in 1987, is a fashion staple that has remained relevant throughout the decades.

The shoe revolutionised the market by cutting a hole into the sole and making the air in the midsole visible.

People were blown away by this, by the fact you could see through the shoe and the air bubbles didn’t pop or explode with the pressure of one’s body. Yet it’s not only the air in them that’s revolutionary, it’s their designs which have evolved over the years and speak to people with its varied personalities.

The Nike Air Max were originally designed for sports performance, but were quickly embraced as lifestyle shoes as well, worn by some of the most famous DJs, rappers and hip hop artists of the time.

Their legacy continues with the Nike Air Max 2090 and Nike Air VaporMax, a shoe where only a thin film separates your foot from the cushion, making it the closest you can get to walking on air.

An Alternative Way to Maximise and Improve your Recovery Times after Training https://www.boxrox.com/an-alternative-way-to-maximise-and-improve-your-recovery-times-after-training/ Sat, 29 Aug 2020 13:05:18 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=104152 Endurance training encompasses much more than the hours you put in at the gym, your programming, and the loads you lift. For training to have its desired effect, athletes ought to fuel properly and recover effectively.

Recovery periods allow our bodies to rebuild what was broken down during training, adapt to the stress of exercise and become stronger. This cycle is known as hypertrophy and wouldn’t be possible without rest.

Having recovered our bodies fully after training, we’re able to get the most out of upcoming sessions with replenished energy stores and repaired damaged tissues.

The best athletes alternate between intensive physical training and rest and recovery periods. It’s no secret overtraining increases an athlete’s risk of injury, and the way to counter this is recovery.

An imbalance caused by overly intensive training and inadequate recovery will not only lead to injury but also to less effective training sessions.

Which means building recovery into your training schedule will allow you to work out harder and consequently can help improve your performance.

THE POWER OF RECOVERY

Athletic recovery is as important as training and nutrition.

Exercise is stress and, while it does provide lasting physical and psychological benefits, it also creates traumas or microtears in your soft tissue, specifically your muscles. This can lead to soreness and pain.

Muscular tenderness and stiffness are common symptoms of fatigue and exercise-induced muscle microtrauma. Metabolic by-products such as lactic acid also accumulate within your cells after intense exercise.

These are all by-products of training, but volume also needs to be considered. An increase in training volume can lead to overuse injuries or strains if not balanced correctly with recovery.

In order to get the most benefit out of training, athletes should set specific time aside to recover.

There are many recovery methods available to athletes nowadays. The ones available to anyone are sleep and rest days. Yet many athletes like to take a more active approach to their recovery.

There are abundant devices that assist us in finding appropriate ways to make the most out of our exercise while maintaining our bodies healthy and injury-free. Tools like foam rollers, infrared therapy and air compression massagers have grown in popularity in the last couple of years.

While the benefits of each will vary depending on every individual’s needs, growing research has found they have a positive impact on delayed onset muscle soreness, perceived fatigue, muscle damage and inflammatory markers post exercise.

Allowing your systems to heal efficiently will enable you to put all-in efforts during training and in competition. Essentially, the quicker you can recover, the more you can get out of your training. Consequently, the more progress you make.

Integrate recovery onto your training program

AIR COMPRESSION DEVICES AND RECOVERY

The Air Relax Boots are a digitally controlled air pressure system that provides dynamic compression to limbs compromised by poor circulation.

“Compression garments add external pressure. Blood can easily pool in the extremities, especially in the lower limbs due to gravity,” writes exercise physiologist Ross Hamilton in his guide for recovery after training on BOXROX. “The extra compression helps squeeze the blood out of the muscles and back to the lungs and heart. This allows fresh oxygenated blood to replace it.”

Air compression devices have been used in medicine for years, and were once reserved for patients with serious muscular and circulatory disorders.

The Air Relax Air Compression Boots offer targeted compression modes with multiple pressure levels and different settings. They fit tightly around the leg and foot, and the compressed air that fills the boot presents a specialist’s sports massage feel.

Its benefits are said to include:

  • Improved blood circulation
  • Boost lymphatic fluid movement (reduce potential swollen legs/feet)
  • Removal of lactic acid (reduce muscle fatigue)
  • Improved flexibility
  • Recovery stimulation
  • Boost oxygen distribution

This is backed by research: a 2017 study found that external pneumatic compression mitigated a reduction in flexibility and pressure-to-pain threshold (the minimum force applied which induces pain), as well as reduced select skeletal muscle oxidative stress and proteolysis markers during recovery from heavy resistance exercise.

Another study concluded that peristaltic pulse dynamic compression is a promising means of accelerating and enhancing recovery after the normal aggressive training that occurs in Olympic and aspiring Olympic athletes.

Research suggests that wearing compression garments may help increase blood flow and reduce swelling, and experts recommend them to promote an increased clearance of lactic acid.

There are processes that occur during training which lead to a reduction in function of the muscles. We can promote certain mechanisms through recovery techniques which allow us to get back to a fresh, ready-to-train state.

High-intensity exercise like CrossFit® causes an accumulation of metabolic by-products like lactic acid within cells. Air compression boots like Air Relax’s can help filter lactic acid build-up in limbs.

The massaging effect of compression lowers feelings of stiffness and reduces tightening or aching muscles after a long workout.

HOW COMPRESSION BOOTS CAN HELP PERFORMANCE

Minimise recovery time and maximise recovery effect for better performance.

When you rest, you create an environment for healing from exercise so that the microtraumas in your muscle tissue can repair. Recovery also enables your body to efficiently clear out metabolic waste. Compression garments could reduce exercise discomfort by limiting sore muscles and preventing cramps experienced after exercise.

Air compression boots could help keep the body healthy over a longer period of time, thus helping you avoid unnecessary niggles and injuries related to intense exercise. Less time off because of injury means more time training and therefore better performance.

A 2018 systematic review of 40 studies on compression garments found that they show a positive trend towards a beneficial effect during recovery, with subsequent performance improved in five of the eight studies where it was measured.

Adding air compression boots to your recovery routine can aid in the process of adapting to the stressors of exercise, an adaptation which translates into better performance.

Maximise your ability to recover now

WHY CHOOSE AIR RELAX RECOVERY SYSTEM?

Air compression boots might never replace a good massage therapist, but for some athletes, massage therapists can get really expensive. Accounting for the boot’s benefits, cost and convenience, they’re a solid option for athletes looking to maximise their recovery.

The Air Relax Air Compression Boots are easy to use and present no complexities or difficult fittings to wear.

Many users have commended the product for having a quiet motor (enabling them to watch TV while inside the boots for one particular athlete) and for it’s flawless fit. The boots come in three different sizes to accommodate for your leg length.

Transport and storage are straightforward, and the boots can be used as part of group therapy or by yourself. They are also easy to integrate into your exercise and recovery program, as no significant additional time is needed to set-up the product.

Recovery is a factor you have control over, make sure you do.

New Nike Metcon 6 Styles About to be Released – Grab Your Pair! https://www.boxrox.com/nike-metcon-6-released/ Fri, 28 Aug 2020 17:05:15 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=110429 The Nike Metcon 6 is the most breathable Metcon to date.

It was specifically designed to take the heat and has been thoroughly tested to take on any – and many – workouts.

nike metcon 6Source: Nike

Breathable and light

Breathability might be the best feature of the Nike Metcon 6 and the one aspect that makes it stand out from many other cross-training shoes.

Nike claims the Metcon 6 is 18% more breathable than the Metcon 5.

They have achieved this by refitting the shoe with an all-mesh upper, which keeps your feet cool and fresh throughout any workout.

nike metcon 6 review
Breathable all-mesh uppers.

No athlete is immune to overheating and your feet and hands cool your body temperature the most, so shoes that keep the air flowing through help you release heat quicker during and in between sets.

Additionally, the all-mesh upper makes the Metcon 6 flexible and light, and gives it a soft feel when performing double unders, burpees and box jumps.

Strong and stable

The first thing you notice when you put on the Metcon 6 is how stable it feels. This is because the shoe features a wide heel, which provides a strong base and firm feel.

The Nike Metcon 6 are so stable they make almost the same satisfying clicking noise as Olympic weightlifting shoes do when you walk, just a little softer.

The midsole also features two kinds of foam; a firm and stable one at the heel of the shoe to allow you to squat, snatch, clean or deadlift on a firm foundation, and a cushioned foam for the forefoot, which gives springiness and support to exercises like sprints, box jumps and rope skipping.

nike metcon 6 womens
Nike Metcon 6 Women’s original colourway.

Like with the Metcon 5, the Nike Metcon 6 comes with an 6mm Hyperlift. These firm inserts for heavy lifting go under the midsole and add underfoot stability to heavy lifts.

The Hyperlifts, which give you a 10mm total drop, will help you hit your max depth for exercises like squats, wall balls, pistols, snatches, and cleans.

Durable and comfortable

Nike has reinforced the mesh on the uppers. You can use the Metcon 6 with confidence, knowing it will withstand rope climbs and, of course, many, many workouts.

The all-rubber outsole is impressive in its durability and grip, and the sticky forefoot rubber provides incredible traction.

Nike Metcon 6 grip

The laces feature Nike’s Flywire, small threads that loop around the base of the laces that help ensure a snug, comfortable yet locked in fit throughout the midfoot.

Nike Metcon 6 Mat Fraser

This is CrossFit’s® reigning champion, Mat Fraser, signature shoe.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CDNDyj8AAzg/

Featuring the same upgrades that the Metcon 6 received, the Mat Fraser edition has additional signature aesthetic details inspired by the four-time Fittest Man on Earth. They are:

  • Back overlay on the uppers to represent the “dark space” Fraser immerses himself to block out distractions
  • Fraser’s focus is represented by a red stripe across the lateral side of the shoe
  • The blue patterns around the shoe represent Fraser’s capacity to execute under pressure
  • Fraser’s famous “Hard Work Pays Off” is printed on the midsole
  • Four circular symbols on the heel represent Fraser’s four consecutive CrossFit Games wins

The biggest update on the Nike Metcon 6 is its breathability. Mat Fraser discussed the importance of not overheating as a key component to the design.

“Staying cool has everything to do with your pacing while training or competing. If you’re overheating, you won’t be able to run a mile at a normal pace, but added to that, you won’t be able to recover from that mile at the same pace either,” he said.

The Nike Metcon 6 Mat Fraser is already available – get it here!

Nike Metcon 6 Sizing

Like its predecessor, the Nike Metcon 6 falls on the smaller scale. I usually wear a women’s size 7.5 (US) in all my running, training and lifestyle shoes, but for the Metcon 6 I went half a size up, to a 8 (US), and they fit perfectly.

With that in mind, if you already own a pair of Nike Metcon 5 and are happy with their fit and feel choose the same size when buying the Nike Metcon 6.

The Metcon 6 accounts for the variability of functional fitness — from movements to needs to environments.

Reebok Nano X Full Review – Our Verdict After a Month of Testing https://www.boxrox.com/reebok-nano-x-full-review-our-verdict-after-a-month-of-testing/ Mon, 22 Jun 2020 17:05:05 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=103934 The Reebok Nano X is the latest iteration of the Nano line and is one of the most impressive cross training shoes in the market. It was designed with versatility in mind, built to tackle a myriad of workouts or combination of movements while remaining relevant for all.

The shoe was created to take on jumping, lifting, rope climbing, gymnastics and whatever else a training session might throw at an athlete.

The Nano X is Reebok’s tenth iteration of their Nano line and the last one produced under CrossFit’s 10-year partnership contract. This shoe is the product of a decade of dedication to the sport and represents its evolution. For the tenth iteration, Reebok created a trainer you can rely on well beyond the box.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B-9lX–nIuj/

REEBOK NANO X – COMFORT

Ten out of ten. The Reebok Nano X is ridiculously comfortable. It has a sock-like feel and the toe box is wide enough to allow your toes to splay while keeping your foot in place.

I have now worn the shoe for over a month for a wide range of activities to test its performance, features and durability, and it hasn’t let me down. I didn’t feel like the shoe needed any “breaking in” as it was nice and flexible from the start and has remained so throughout my training.

A new EVA-foam rim has been added around the shoe and it cups the foot in place. Additionally, there are overlays of added support across the uppers that serve the same purpose.

Reebok introduced a new high-density foam collar for the Nano X. This gives the shoe a bootie look and provides extra cushioning. The tongue is also a bit taller and is subtly separated into three sections, giving it a flush and comfortable fit around your ankle.

reebok nano x

I’ve spent days walking around in the Nano X without any problems.

NANO X PERFORMANCE: FLEXIBLE AND STABLE

The new Flexweave (the material on top of the shoe) is stretchier than the one used for the Nano 9s. This means that the front of the shoe can be bent with ease and it’s great for all movements that require your feet to flex – lunges, burpees, short sprints, box step overs, double unders.

The Nano X is also great for exercises that require foot stability. The Flexweave has been removed from the back in place of a stiffer nylon, with some mesh here and there for breathability. The more rigid material at the back, together with the ankle collar, secure your heel in place in a way I hadn’t felt any cross trainer do before.

The heel cup feels way firmer than the Nano 9 and the whole back of the shoe is rigid and stable, which was great for everything lifting related, from Olympic weightlifting and slow lifts, to overhead dumbbell squats and wall balls.

There is one area where I was particular impressed with the Nano X and it was weightlifting, the shoe truly excels at this.

The only exercise I wasn’t able to test the shoes in was rope climbs, as the indoor spaces of gyms were closed. However, the “Ropepro” feature from the Nano 9 was kept on the soles of the Nano X. Additionally, a protective overlay has been added at the bottom of the lacing system to protect laces from abrasive ropes. All of this gives me the confidence the Nano X will deliver during rope climbs.

Where I wasn’t so sure

While the Nano X is exceptionally comfortable, the added overlays for durability and security do mean the shoe isn’t as breathable as other models. I wore the Nano X for over two hours for my longest training session during the test and the shoes got pretty hot inside.

However, note that I’ve also worn the Nano X to walk around all day and go to work without facing this issue.

The Nano X has been marketed as a runnable shoe. Sadly, I felt this was the one aspect that lets the shoe down. While it is flexible enough at the front, the back of the Nano X is incredibly solid – this is great for weightlifting, but less so for running.

If you’re a rearfoot runner (you strike the ground with your heel first when you run) the back stability of the Nano X is can be a hinderance, as the flexibility doesn’t naturally flow through the heel and into the front of the shoe.

reebok nano x

Firmness aside, the Nano X is a relatively heavy shoe, weighting at 313g each for a female size 7.5 (US). This quickly becomes apparent while running and I found that any distance longer than 200m gave the feeling that you were running with weights on your ankles.

I do have to admit that I come from a trail and ultra-running background and am used to highly specific, lightweight running shoes. Someone without my biases might not find the same issues I did while running with the Nano X.

All in all, I’m not disappointed the Nano X is probably not the best shoe to run long distances in. The shoe was exceptional in every other area, and I was truly impressed by it.

REEBOK NANO X VERDICT

The Reebok Nano X is one of the most comfortable and versatile training shoes I’ve ever worn. It’s got a great fit and really does perform with whatever you throw at it. The X is not the best shoe for long-distance running but it does truly excel in its lifting performance.

Putting it on, you can tell the Nano X is a product of ten years of deep knowledge of the demands a cross training shoe requires. After a month of testing, I can confidently say it performs as good as it feels.

Performance aside, Reebok has gone for a huge makeover on the way the Nano X looks. The shoe is a far cry from the plain design from the 8 and 9, and personally, I really like it. It’s a funky mix between retro and modern and I love the streetwear style.

nano xSource: Photography by Jose Cano

In terms of sizing, I went for my usual 7.5 and that was perfect, so I’d recommend you go with your regular shoe size if you’re considering buying a pair.

Reebok were the first brand to create an official shoe for the up and coming competitive fitness movement, and wearing the Nano X it’s easy to tell there’s a decade of dedication behind the shoe.

The Nano X is one of the best training shoes on the market right now, and it’s one you can take well beyond the Box. I’ll continue to wear mine for my upcoming training sessions and you’ll probably find me casually wearing them on a day to day basis too.

How to Unlock Your Performance and Energy Levels by Analysing your Breath https://www.boxrox.com/how-to-unlock-your-performance-by-analysing-your-breath/ Fri, 15 May 2020 17:08:26 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=101750 Lumen is a ground-breaking portable device that, through a breath, tells you what source of fuel your body is using to produce energy. Previously hard-to-access data is now available to anyone.

Every athlete needs energy to perform. The ability to walk, run, lift weights and, on a more basic level, sustain every bodily function, depends on one’s ability to extract energy from the food we consume.

This energy comes from primarily two sources: fats and carbs. Your body’s ability to turn this fuel into energy, a process known as metabolism, is a key determinant of exercise performance. Depending on what exercise you’re doing, whether that’s a walk in the park, some yoga or a long CrossFit® session, you will need to access different energy sources.

On a basic level, it’s only possible to use fat for energy when the intensity of the exercise is low enough so you can deliver oxygen to your muscles at the rate required. As your intensity goes up, and you require more energy each minute, the proportion of energy that’s coming from fat comes down and that of carbs goes up.

When you’re doing a high-intensity WOD for example, fuel comes from mostly carbohydrates because the energy you require needs to be created at a very fast rate.

Knowing what source of fuel your body is burning for energy at any given time can be an invaluable piece of information for athletes, and Lumen can give you this knowledge.

With the data acquired from measuring your respiratory exchange ratio (RER), which establishes whether you’re using fats or carbs for fuel, you can train your body to become better at shifting between energy sources and to tap into different stores according to your needs – think of it as metabolic flexibility.

So how does this actually work and how is it applied to CrossFit®?

VALUABLE INFORMATION STORED IN ONE BREATH

Knowing what kind of fuel you’re burning in the leadup to a workout can be the difference between an average session and an successful one. Simply put, if your carb stores are low (which means you’re burning mainly fat), you won’t be able to deliver oxygen to your muscles at a fast enough rate to create the energy that the exercise demands.

Lumen is a ground-breaking device that tells you whether you’re burning carbs or fats for fuel, on the spot. This information provides exciting data that you, as an athlete, can then act upon.

When you start with Lumen, you can choose for it to use the data to either lead you through healthy weight loss, improving your metabolism and building good habits, or optimising nutrition to support workouts and improve performance. I’m using Lumen as a way to improve my performance.

lumen metabolism breathe

This means that, every time I breathe into Lumen, it uses the data acquired to optimise my nutrition and make sure I have enough energy for my upcoming workouts. As Lumen’s AI gets to know me, it also learns how my body reacts to specific exercise, and offers nutritional recommendations based on that.

Establishing whether your body is burning carbs or fat for fuel is solid science and is calculated by measuring an individual’s respiratory exchange ratio (RER). This is the ratio between CO2 produced in metabolism and oxygen used.

Lumen calculates this ratio based on the RER metric by measuring the CO2 concentration in a single breath. You breathe a fixed volume of air (dynamic to each individual) through the device, hold it for 10 seconds and exhale fully. Lumen then analyses your breath and tells you your metabolic fuel usage.

METABOLISM AND SPORT, LUMEN HAS THE DATA

I “unlock my day” by breathing into Lumen every morning – I’ve been using the device for close to a month now. I also get a reading every time before I exercise, log the type and duration of my exercise, and use Lumen again afterwards. I do the same before and after for meals, so I can see how my carb stores change after specific meals (or a specific number of carb servings).

metabolic flexibility lumen

My readings before workouts have varied between ones and twos (burning mostly fats), threes (burning both fats and carbs) and fours (burning mostly carbs). Having this insight has proven to be highly beneficial, and I can act on it.

My energy levels during my CrossFit® workouts have been higher than usual because I can ensure I’m fuelled adequately for each and every one of them.

By using Lumen after a workout, I can learn what impact different intensities have on my systems. Starting a workout on a Lumen score of three (burning both fats and carbs for energy) and finishing on a two (burning mostly fats) means I used my carb stores on that exercise, but I probably wouldn’t have been better off having started with higher carb stores, as I still had some carbs left.

metabolism measure
Measure your metabolism with Lumen.

When my reading after a workout is a one (burning more than 84% fat) however, I know my workout was limited in part by the fact that I couldn’t get hold of the carbs, so I wasn’t able to exercise at the highest intensity. This was also reflected by the way I felt: I was destroyed.

Now I know to replenish my carbohydrate storage before a workout around the same intensity.

With CrossFit® being such a high intensity sport, starting a workout with a Lumen score of one is not a good idea. I have found that, more often than not, I feel great and ready to tackle a workout, yet my carb stores are depleted and I’m burning mostly fat. So, even when I feel good, it’s been incredibly useful to know that, in order to make the most of my upcoming workout, I should fuel myself properly for it.

Lumen metabolismSource: Lumen
Like having a nutritionist in your pocket.

With workouts I’m comfortable with – anything to do with long endurance – I thought I wouldn’t have to worry too much about my fuel. And I was right, what Lumen has done for me there, despite my not needing to make a change, is told me that I’m doing well in that area (my body is not limited by my energy delivery) and I should focus on other areas to improve.

IDENTIFYING CHANGES IN MY METABOLIC FUEL USAGE

Using Lumen before and after mealtimes has also been incredibly interesting. The ability to see what my body is doing before a meal and how (and when) it reacts to it is a game changer. After four carb servings, when does my body shift from using mostly fats to burning both fats and carbs? Do the carb servings have an effect at all? Does it take thirty minutes or an hour? What if it was only two carb servings?

With this knowledge, I now know what and when to eat to fuel efficiently and effectively for my workouts.

Everyone has a different metabolism. To know what source of energy you’re using at any given time is not only a really interesting bit of information and insight into our own bodies but is also incredibly useful.

For me, it has meant I can use science, rather than guesswork, to fuel myself specifically for performance, optimise my workouts and keep better track of my nutrition.

What I like about Lumen the most is how actionable it is. I breathe into it, it provides me with data and I can do something about it.

Everyone’s metabolism is constantly changing, and your source of energy will vary depending on the time of day, the activities you’ve done, the food you’ve eaten, your stress and sleep levels. To have the ability to know whether you’re burning fats or carbs whenever you want is revolutionary.

Try it yourself

Lumen is a striking product; from the design of the physical device to the app, you can tell a lot of thought and effort went into making these smooth, incredibly user friendly and high quality.

The materials used for the device look and feel superior, holding it is intuitive and the way it interacts with you feels right. All information presented on the app is clear and easy to understand, and while the topics might seem complicated, everything is broken down into understandable slides.

Lumen is a quality-built product, the design truly stands out, and the data it provides you with is incredibly valuable.

Five Reasons You Should Check Out the New Reebok Nano X https://www.boxrox.com/five-reasons-you-should-check-out-the-new-reebok-nano-x/ Wed, 13 May 2020 20:05:29 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=102126 The latest iteration of the Reebok Nano line, the Reebok Nano X, is one of the most impressive cross training shoes currently in the market. Designed to tackle all kinds of workouts and ready for all challenges, athletes will be able to test their extremes with this shoe.

Reebok has created a shoe fit for running, jumping, lifting, rope climbing and whatever else a training session might throw at an athlete. They have kept the features that made previous iterations great and innovated on the looks, fit, comfort and performance to create the impressive Nano X – the Nano’s 10th iteration.

These are our top five reasons you should check out the new Reebok Nano X.

1. NEW CONSTRUCTION

Built on the same platform as the Nano 9s, there are quite a few similarities between the shoes. However, the Nano X present a radical stylistic departure from any previous Nano, or any other cross training shoe in the market for that matter.

Yet the looks aren’t the only thing that has changed. The Reebok Nano X are built with a new Flexweave upper, which makes for a stretchier top of the shoe.

On top of the Flexweave, overlays for added support have been added to help secure the foot in place a bit better. An EVA-foam rim runs all round the shoe, cupping the foot in place and giving the Nano X a sock-like feel.

“We’ve innovated the Nano for ten years to reach the standards set by the loyal Nano community. We listened to athletes of all levels from around the world for guidance throughout the Nano X creation process,” said Tal Short, Senior Product Manager of Training Footwear at Reebok.

While the “Ropepro” feature from the Nano 9 was kept on the soles of the shoes, the lacing system includes a protective overlay on the lower part of the laces to protect them from harsh ropes.

2. FLEXIBLE AND STABLE

The Reebok Nano X are built with a new high-density foam collar, which means there’s more cushioning in the back of the foot. Nevertheless, the heel cup feels a lot firmer than its previous model.

“The fit at the heel part of the Nano 10s is excellent,” said As Many Reviews As Possible when he released his verdict on the shoes.

The back of the shoe is rigid and stable – perfect for weightlifting – while the front is flexible and breathable, which is great for box jumps, lunges, burpees or any other movement that requires flexing of the foot.

The Nano X bend and move with the foot incredibly well.

3. BUILT FOR EVERYONE

The Reebok Nano X has been tested by CrossFit athletes, runners and high intensity fitness enthusiasts alike. The Nano X are built to be as versatile as athletes’ interests and to accompany them through all of them.

All CrossFit branding on the shoe has been removed and the Nano X are marketed for fans of all different types of workout.

Sizing has been kept true in the Nano X, so your regular shoe size should fit to these Nanos.

4. BASED ON A DECADE OF LEARNING

Being the 10th iteration of the Reebok Nano like, the Nano X is a shoe built on a decade of experience. Before the Nanos, there was no shoe built specifically for the changing range of activities and challenges functional fitness presents.

The Reebok Nano X are shoes made specifically to help athletes excel in every category.

The Nano X might look like a lot has changed, but the core values from the first Nano have remained the same for every edition: the best possible shoe for the community, by the community.

The Nano X is an evolution of the Nano 9, not a radical makeover. Which is a good thing, because the Nano 9 is a really good shoe.

5. STUNNING LOOKS

Performance is the biggest factor when it comes to buying new shoes, but looks are also an important consideration.

Reebok has gone for a huge makeover on the way the Nano X looks – they’re more sneaker-like, slightly retro, streetwear shoes.

No other shoe on the fitness market looks like the Nano X and we’re big fans of this new design.

Reebok created the first official shoe for the up and coming competitive fitness movement. The Nano X represents a decade of dedication and a shoe you can rely on well beyond just the Box.

Enable your Full Potential with the Brand New Rehband Carbon Black Knee Sleeves https://www.boxrox.com/rehband-carbon-black-knee-sleeves/ Thu, 27 Feb 2020 19:30:02 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=99212 Available in 5mm and 7mm, the sleeve offers a minimal, all black aesthetic and is designed to support performance for all athletes– from beginners to elite. The black matte logo is intended for discretion and a sleek look.

THE RX CARBON BLACK

Classified officially as a medical device, the Carbon Black knee sleeve offer premium quality, designed and created in collaboration with top athletes, to provide a support that has a discrete logo, which is something often required during competitions or organizational regulations.

The Carbon Black knee sleeve has been developed together with tier 1 units to fit with uniform regulations for military, law enforcement and rescue services.

HOW CAN KNEE SLEEVES HELP YOUR PERFORMANCE?

Knee sleeves are anatomically shaped support sleeves for knees, providing compression, stability and warmth to help increase performance and to prevent injuries.

There are three main benefits to wearing knee sleeves.

  1. Compression
  • The anatomical design and high-quality materials used in Rehband knee sleeves ensures an exceptional fit and a comfortable degree of compression
  • Compression can help to reduce inflammation of the knee joint and alleviate mild overuse pains
  • Compression enhances muscle memory for correct movement patterns, helping to ensure better movement in general for athletes
  1. Warmth
  • Heat retention keeps muscles, connective tissues and joints warm, reducing the likelihood of injury
  • Allows your body to stay warm between sets

  1. Proprioception

Proprioception is your personal spatial perception and awareness of the position and movement of your own body. It is vitally important when it comes to any kind of sport, but especially in CrossFit®, where any athlete is required to perform many different kinds of exercises.

  • Knee sleeves increases the awareness of knee position, degree of flexion, and balance
  • The stability they offer creates an additional mental and physical feeling of safety

“The reason I feel so comfortable with recommending Rehband to other people is because they have a medical classification behind them. That means that all the claims that Rehband is making for their products must have medical research behind them. I feel comfortable with standing behind a product like that.” – Annie Thorisdottir

CHOOSING THE RIGHT THICKNESS FOR YOUR NEEDS

When selecting the appropriate knee sleeves for you, it is important to take your athletic requirements into account.

  • 5mm is designed for a general “all purpose” use (i.e., CrossFit®, light weightlifting).
  • 7mm is designed for low movement, high strength activities (i.e., heavy lifting, powerlifting, and Strongman activities).

Find the right Rehband Carbon Black knee sleeve for you

HOW KNEE SLEEVES WORK

Knee sleeves work by providing warmth and compression to the knees. The compression increases the blood flow and the receptive input from the knee, helping an athlete perform more controlled and stable movements.

The warming effect of the knee sleeves helps to increase blood flow quicker, and is highly effective for keeping knees warm throughout sporting activity.

KNEE SLEEVES AND INJURY

Knee sleeves are exceptionally useful for athletes that are returning from injury or are looking for intelligent ways to prevent injury.

Rehband athlete Annie Thorisdottir, the two-time Icelandic winner of the CrossFit Games®, is no stranger to returning from injury.

She won back to back titles in 2011 and 2012 before a back injury left her unable to compete and defend her title in 2013. This setback changed her perspective on her career.

“First, it was all about winning. Later on, Annie’s goal changed to focusing on coming back from a back injury as a better athlete. It became an important challenge to inspire others that might be going through the same thing, and to become better than before because of the set-back, not in spite of them.”

Annie works with Rehband to develop products, on R&D and makes use of their products on the competition floor and in the BOX.

“As an athlete, as a human being, you never want to become a hundred percent again. You want to become better than you were before, you always strive to become better, faster and stronger.” Annie Thorisdottir.

It can be daunting coming back to training after an injury. Often you may lose confidence as well as fitness and strength, but knee sleeves can be a great way to support you, both mentally and physically.

Rehband Carbon Black Knee Sleeves offer compression, stability, warmth and improved proprioception in unbeatable style. Whether you are a competition level athlete, a beginner or returning from injury– support your movement, health and progress with the product known for quality.

The Brand New Nike Metcon React: Excellence Redefined https://www.boxrox.com/nike-metcon-react/ Tue, 03 Dec 2019 18:21:07 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=95263 The Nike Metcon React is featherweight and form-fitting, building on the fine foundations of the Metcon 5 whilst employing newer technology to provide better cushioning, responsiveness and breathability as well as highly durable grip.

The new technology allowed me to move quicker and feel lighter on my feet in general, which translated well into WODs, especially longer conditioning workouts and training sessions with a wide variety of different movements.

So, what’s new?

BATTLEKNIT UPPER

Battleknit is a lightweight TPU infused knit, zonally fused for durability. It makes the Nike Metcon React light, breathable, comfortable and fast.

Nike told us that “The flyknit upper has been heated to the point of melting in certain zones of hi abrasion to create extra durability where needed. This is a 1st for Nike, and takes a different approach to how we have used flyknit in the past. It really is a great innovation that takes a Nike proprietary technology and makes it training specific for our athlete’s needs.”

Durability is ensured because the most vulnerable areas are given the largest amount of support. This intelligent approach to engineering and design, built with feedback from the community and years of experience, manages to maintain lightness without compromising practical toughness.

GHOSTLACE

Another technical innovation of the Nike Metcon React is the Ghostlace, a quick pull lacing system that adjusts easily and tucks away to eliminate distractions during WODs.

Combined with the bootie fit, the training shoe is great for movements such as bar facing burpees, box jump overs, thrusters, wall balls and other exercises that tend to be grouped into higher volume sets.

They were especially useful during lunges and unilateral lower bodywork, as support from the lacing system helped to stabilise my feet for movements such as overhead kettlebell lunges.

REACT CUSHIONING

One thing that you will notice when you first wear the Nike Metcon React training shoe is how comfortable and well cushioned they feel. The lighter, more responsive midsole is crafted with a 6mm offset and is built for speed.

The sole is the same strong, stable and reliable design that can also be found on The Nike Metcon 5, ensuring superior grip for movements in every direction. The rope wrap on the sole allows you to gain extra grip when rope climbing Hugely useful for those moments when fatigue starts setting in during longer workouts.

STYLE

In fine keeping with the Metcon tradition, the Nike Metcon React looks striking. From the bold new logo on the upper through to the wide heel wrap, they are designed to leave a lasting impression.

In white/atmosphere or black/white, the first editions stick to a muted, minimal palette. Find out which one suits your style best.

TRAINING TIPS FROM NIKE ATHLETE JOSH BRIDGES

Josh Bridges is a veteran of the fitness community. Pick up some training tips that will help you improve your performances.

NEVER WALK AWAY

When you train, and need to take a short rest during a WOD, stay where you are. Don’t turn your back towards the object you are working with. When you are ready, attack it once again.

“I never walk away. I’m never going to rest and walk away from what I’m doing. For me it’s a bit of a defeated posture. It feels like that barbell just beat me and I’m never going to let a barbell and weights beat me.”

IT DOESN’T HURT TO GO A LITTLE BIT FASTER

“A buddy of mine once told me that it doesn’t hurt to run just a little faster – and he was right.”

Keep this phrase in your mind when you train. Can you pick up the pace a tiny bit? Can you go slightly faster on that long set of burpees or box jumps? Think about improving your performance in fractions, and these will all add up into better overall performances.

DON’T OVERTHINK THE WORKOUT

“It’s just a workout man, go out there and do it. If you have to put the barbell down for second then put it down and pick it right back up again. I think overthinking can get you caught up in some bad scenarios.”

SMALL GOALS EQUAL BIG GOALS

Break up reps. Whenever you are faced with a large number of reps to complete, always break the workout down into smaller manageable chunks. Mentally, this will help to make it a much easier task.

“If I’m faced with a set of 30, I’m gonna do 5 then see how I feel, then I’m gonna do 5 more. Then 5 more. Once I hit 15 it might be starting to hurt so I change the goal to 3, then hit 3 more and so on. All of a sudden I’m at 25 and then it’s only one more, and you can always do one more.”

ENHANCE YOUR PERFORMANCE AND RESULTS

The Nike React Metcon, for Women and Men, builds on the stability and traction from the training original and combines it with Nike’s most comfortable and high-performance cushioning.

Tackle high-impact WODs with a light, breathable upper and durable grip to help you ensure success and style every time.

Equip yourself for success

For the Weekend Warriors

Whether you are an accountant, teacher, lawyer or truck driver during the week, when it comes to the weekend, you love to break out your inner warrior!

Like Bruce Wayne and Batman, you walk the line between two people and transform yourself every time you step into the Box.

The Improved cushioning in the forefoot and the soft rubber midsole protection wrap work together to provide exactly what you need.

For the CrossFit® Mums

You probably have the most hectic and busy schedule of everyone on this list. Your free time is almost non-existent and when it does appear it needs to be snapped up and enjoyed. For the Students

When money is tight, you need to make the right economic choices. These are designed to last. Durable and solid, this is one investment that makes sense. There are many sensible ways to cut costs, sacrificing your health is not one of them.

For the Elite Athletes

When Rich Froning was standing on top of the podium at the 2018 CrossFit® Games last year he was wearing Nanos. When he was standing on top of the podium the year prior to that he was also wearing Nanos. As the 2019 CrossFit® Games ended, he was wearing them again as he stood proudly clutching his first place medal.

Rebuild and Rise: Nike Launch the New Metcon 5 https://www.boxrox.com/rebuild-and-rise-nike-launch-the-new-metcon-5/ Thu, 18 Jul 2019 13:32:57 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=89926 Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Thuri Helgadottir will be competing at the CrossFit Games for the fifth time this year. The Icelandic athlete, who has finished within the top 10 at every single Regional she’s competed in since 2012, was missing from the biggest stage last year.

This season however, Thuri finished the Open ranked 36th worldwide, making the Top 20 after National Champions, banned athletes, and the ones that chose to compete on a team were accounted for. Thuri also finished 4th at the Strength in Depth Sanctional and the Reykjavik CrossFit Championship.

She has trained and focused on everything; building raw strength at the start of the season, then increasing general endurance and finally completing CrossFit workouts. All whilst focusing on becoming an Olympic athlete and representing Iceland in weightlifting too.

A parallel line is drawn when unveiling the latest version of the Metcon shoe; just like athletes focus on fine-tuning every single detail and improving, the Nike Metcon 5 represent hours spent perfecting a craft, the attention to every detail and the desire to be the best.

It is the most tuned Metcon ever.

Nike Metcon 5

The Metcon 5 was made around the Phoenix philosophy of “rebuild and rise,” and for Spanish Nike athlete Rita García this resonates. As the first Spaniard to be crowned Fittest in Europe South last year, Rita’s ultimate dream is to make it to the CrossFit Games. Having been Spain’s National Champion two years running, the stakes were high going into this year.

But the Open’s first workout didn’t favour her and, even with high finishes in the following workouts, she was unable to climb up to the first position for a third year in a row.

“There’s highs and there’s lows. You should learn from those low moments. As every athlete knows, there’s moments where you expect something, and you don’t achieve it, but coming out of it you become stronger and the desire to keep pushing is higher,” she said.

The Metcon 5 highlights the journey it takes to get to the highest point in the sport, championing those that, despite setbacks, rise again against adversity.

All athletes go through a process; of testing, adapting, and improving – so has the Metcon 5.

BUILT FOR PERFORMANCE

The Reebok CrossFit Nano 9 has been created with three main concerns when it comes to performance.

These are a strong foundation, durable comfort and ultimate stability. The latest model builds on a legacy that has evolved with the Sport of Fitness at every turn of its exciting history.

The minimal drop outsole is incredibly supportive for explosive lifting and provides secure footing for dynamic movements such as bar facing burpees and box jump overs. The wide toe box and flexweave upper make this the most comfortable Nano I have ever worn, and the breathability kept my feet fresh during longer WODs.

ADDED CUSHIONING THROUGHOUT

I liked the fact that Reebok have increased the cushioning around the collar and the footbed. In addition to this, the Reebok CrossFit Nano 9 still contains the booty system that the Nano 8’s first pioneered.

With the 9’s there is less cushioning at the toe. This enabled me to splay my toes out more for lifting and felt like a big improvement.

DECOUPLED HEEL AND UPDATED OUTSOLE

The rubber is divided on the heel and sole, allowing your foot to really bend and flex. This is also designed to create a better stride when running.

The CrossFit® specific outsole design features MetaSplit grooves for better traction. This creates a lot of flexibility and grip in the forefoot.

Another touch that I noticed is that the texture of the soles resembles the knurling that you would find on a barbell. It is a small detail, but one that signifies their commitment to excellence across the board.

I tested the training shoe on wood flooring, in the box and outside on concrete, gravel and slippery stone paths and it kept me stable and secure.

I also liked the way that the decoupled heel made me feel more stable for overhead lunges and other unilateral exercises, especially during highly fatigued conditions. The outsole is hardy and almost indestructible for rope climbs.

DYNAMIC NEW STYLE

One of the most noticeable stylistic developments is the return to the classic Reebok Logo. Reebok have coupled this with a simple, minimal silhouette and a completely redesigned sole to form a stylish and memorable visual.

The result is a faster and slimmer model, back in touch with Reebok heritage. The overall aesthetic feels more like a sneaker than a piece of equipment.

2019 CROSSFIT GAMES® EDITION

The brand-new CrossFit Games® model comes in a paired by couplet of fiery orange and charcoal black. This will be worn by the Reebok athlete such as reigning champion Tia-Clair Toomey and Pat Vellner.

UPDATED STRETCH FLEXWEAVE UPPER

The fibres are packed tighter together, but there is not an overabundance of flexibility. This means that your feet feel light but locked into place. To be honest I found it extremely comfortable.

The lacing pattern connects through to the flexweave, and the added structure underneath augments that feeling of being secure and stable.

ENHANCED BREATHABILITY

The structural elements I described above add to the breathability of the shoe. You can easily head out for a run, then come back into the box and chill and then workout without changing shoes. To be honest, I ended up wearing these all day and they were highly comfortable.

On the other hand, if you are heading out for a run in wetter climates, then don’t expect to have dry feet when you get back!

NEW NANO WRAP

The heel portion of the shoe is the TPU carrier for the midsole foam, which runs along the entire length of the shoe.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 9

The raised sidewalls lock your foot in place when lifting and keeps you solid for squatting. There is a strong feeling of quality and strength and for me, the Reebok CrossFit Nano 9s are one of the most stable training shoes on the market right now.

The heel is wider, protruding over the sides of the shoe and adding extra surface area, contributing to this feeling of stability.

Reebok CrossFit Nano 9

I’m currently working through a strength cycle and I found that I could easily generate power through my feet for squats and deadlifts whilst wearing the Reebok Nano 9s. Working between 80 – 95% of my 1rm I wore the Nano 9s on and they felt rock solid.

REEBOK CROSSFIT NANO 9 – FIT

It is worth mentioning that the Reebok Nano 9 fit true to size. The toe box is wide, as in often the case with this line of training shoes.

The Reebok CrossFit Nano 9 is designed for versatility. Going for a quick run? A 45-minute weightlifting session? A bodyweight CrossFit WOD? Then the Nano has you covered.

Light, fast, flexible and responsive, yet sturdy and supportive for lifting, this training shoe has you covered for whatever today’s WOD has in store.

The Nike Metcon 5: Excellence Redefined https://www.boxrox.com/the-nike-metcon-5-excellence-redefined/ Fri, 12 Jul 2019 10:18:50 +0000 https://www.boxrox.com/?p=89929&preview=true&preview_id=89929 After 12,124 hours of testing by top athletes, the Nike Metcon 5 has arrived!

The fifth iteration is the most tuned and extreme Metcon ever, boasting new performance upgrades that cater to Cross Training athletes of all levels and abilities.

So, What’s New?

  • Brand new Haptic upper design
  • 6/8mm Hyperlift heel insert
  • Upgraded section for rope climbs
  • Complete forefoot and sole redesign
  • Test hours: 12,124
  • Offset: 4mm + 12mm
  • Abrasion: 1850 Cycles
  • Traction: 1.35 GRF

Extreme Stability

The Nike Metcon 5 has a wider heel for greater support. Combined with the exclusive new Hyperlift technology, you are looking at unparalleled stability in the bottom position of the squat, snatch and clean lifts. Aside from the Romaleos, this is the most stable training shoe that Nike have ever created.

The Hyperlift is a flexible but highly supportive 8mm heel insert for him and 6mm insert for her. This creates an even firmer feel and a slightly elevated foot position, increasing dorsiflexion.

Lauren Fisher “I really liked the heel lift and felt the added support but it was not a distraction when I did box jumps and sled pushes which traditionally would be uncomfortable with a lifter.”

Indestructible Durability

The new Haptic upper withstands the abuse of rope climbs and other movements that can traditionally break down a training shoe.

A full-length rubber bottom with no foam exposure ensures fewer weak points to wear down or fail as you train and compete.

Tuned Traction and Enhanced Speed

The enhanced directional traction pattern on the outsole and rope wrap provides improved traction for sled pushes and improved grip for rope climbing ascents, and a smoother slip for the descent.

Lauren Fisher tested both of these aspects of the new Nike Metcon “The piece for rope climbs is built at an angle which grips the rope much better than the 4’s.” The training shoe is designed to ‘lock in’ to the rope when you climb. Once at the top, simply adjust the angle of your feet to improve control during each descent. When every second counts, these improvements can be the difference between first and second place.

There is also enhanced traction on the forefoot. This improves flexibility and allows athletes to generate more power. Lauren explains:

“The grooves on the sole really helped with sled pushes.”

This also transitions effectively to quick, responsive movements and jumps. Perfect for box jumps, bar facing burpees and sprinting.

“I honestly love ALL the versions of the Metcon, but there’s more flexibility in this forefoot – the 4 still feels stiff to me, this one is much better for running and jumping.”

Distinctive Style

Nike have inverted the traditional pattern of the sole and rope wrap section onto the haptic upper. This playful nod to the prestige and history of the evolution of the Nike Metcon shows an acute and unrivalled sense of detail and craftsmanship.

The Nike Metcon 5 is minimal and stylish, a skillful union between form and function.

George Orwell once wrote “Who controls the past controls the present and who controls the present controls the future.”

The Nike Metcon has owned the past in terms of performance, style and winning results. This Nike Metcon 5, released now, in the present, is set to help athletes to make significant improvements and, now that it will once again be allowed back into the CrossFit Games®, has become the shoe that controls the standards of excellence for the future.

Nike Metcon Flashback

The shoe below is the Nike Metcon training prototype worn by Josh Bridges in 2014.

It was debuted and tested at the 2014 Socal Regionals. Josh Bridges destroyed all seven events and finished in 2nd place overall. The sprints, rope climbs, hang power cleans, hang snatches, pistols and many other exercises from that year tested the shoe to its limits. And it delivered.

In the aftermath of the Nike Metcon’s first meaningful emergence into the world of Cross Training, they realised that this prototype had real potential after having been tested and approved by one of the top athletes in the game. Bridges gave his feedback on what worked well and what could be improved. the Nike design team acted on this and the model progressed.

This close-knit relationship between Nike design team and elite athlete, with the latter helping to judge and inform the changes, features and materials of each Nike Metcon, has been the driving force behind the continual commitment to excellence that has manifested itself in The Nike Metcon 5.

In 2019, Nike will make its first appearance at the CrossFit Games®. With an impressive roster of athletes, including Mat Fraser and Sara Sigmundsdottir among many other elite names, this is the first year that The Nike Metcon will finally be put to the test at the highest stage of fitness in the world.
